I mean, as fun as it was, the only thing new was the well-crafted and customizable engine/UI. WoW is to MMOs what DOOM was to first-person shooters: a significant tech evolution.
qft. I´ve always been hoping for a better engine for Daoc. WoW release blew me away with its clean flow of animations and movement.
It is hard to say if Rift really is a decent opponent to WoW since it is a clone. We´re pretty much trading one poison for another

.
Imo, Rift is the "wrong" game to be considering a true opponent.
Games like GW2 would be more like it, because it is based on a different concept rather than copypasting stuff 1:1.
Personally, Rift is worth playing for those who have been playing WoW way too long (like me). I hope they will improve those stiff animations, although deep within, I doubt they will.
Grr, almost saved up the cash.
DoWII: Retribution or Rift, daaaaayum.
I went through the class listing in Rift and I did slobber ^^ but then I saw the multiplayer vids with all the tactical gimmicks of DoWII. DOH!
Can´t make up my mind now.

There is always going to be a comarison to WoW no matter what comes out. It's been the most inovative.
(awesome pic, Kayfabe ^^)
I think he just means that WoW is the median-line of whatever. You could bring out any game and it will always be compared to WoW.
