Here's what I think are the major reasons:
- The game is 9 years old and you just need a change of pace.
- People/guilds you used to play with quit so now you have to pug or solo.
- Things have changed in your real life so you can no longer play as much, spend the time needed to keep your template up-to-date, afford a buff bot, etc.
- You used to play on a smaller server/cluster and find Ywain too zergy and the quality of soloing, small manning, and 8v8ing much less good.
- You are pissed off at all the numerous problems that Mythic never bothers to fix (Halloween moon, WS/con poison, warping pets, the Camelot Herald, the lag and ghosting, etc.), the seemingly random changes they make to screw players over (BG spellcrafting), or the things they promised to do but haven't (remove -Ywain#).
- You're sick of the endless campaign / re-itemization grind and the resulting need to constantly redo your templates.
Best list ever compiled! Someone send this to Mythic over and over again...
I would add buffbots. You know I have learned to live with them since about year 2 when I got my own and stopped caring. However, you gotta realize that this was one of the worst "short term thinking" mistakes Mythic ever made, and they were never prepared to man up to this mistake, eat the temporary drop in account subs, and simply do the right thing!
Especially since the game is outdated in many ways, asking players to pay double or even triple what they have to pay in modern MMOs is simply self-destructive.
I personally knew a lot of people that quit over BB alone, some because they were raging mad about them back in the early days, but far far more just over the years here and there who said "why should I pay $30 to play an outdated game?" Many of them are playing various other MMOs. Even though I personally hate the "free2play" model, I know lots and lots of friends who love it and get by on about $5-10 a month and loving the games they're playing. (RoM, now LoTRO, etc. Not my cup of tea cuz of the PvP/RvR, but many of my former DAoC friends love these games and keep trying to pull me into theirs.)

Mythic has no common sense and fails to realize that by simply releasing a bare-bones server option, (sin TOA y other mistakes) they would recoup a large amount of players who love DAOC but lack the time. Many of us were young when this game came out and now are adults with families and full time jobs and would welcome a more simple gaming experience with the core aspects we love so much such as 3 realms, split rvr-pve areas.
I did quit because I enjoyed Classic servers even when there were 100 people in each realm more then TOA. Wouldn't hurt to have kept one server open and allowed re-transfers back.

That's the thing with buffbots...nobody would really mind not having them if they other guy didn't. That said, I'd keep playing without my buffbot, but not if buff pots remained in game. I simply don't want to deal with them and if they other guy could use them, the door wouldnt hit me on the way out.

alot of people that quit over BB, people having to pay 30 dollars a month..
those two comments dont mix.
if you knew ALOT of people then, they could have shared a bot between them 1 bot will buff 6-8 people, if 6 people shared the cost of a Bot, then that isnt 30 dollars a month.. its 17.50...
and before people start saying you cant buff that many people, yes you can.. because any group will have a healer to provide base buffs, the bot only needs to cover spec buffs and 1 base buff, 1 spec buffer is all a group ever needs.
if a normal group situation, buffs are not a problem, the only people who ever realy cry about buffs are the idiots that try to solo play in a game designed and balanced around group play.

1) buffbots. keeping a DAOC sub alive costs $30/month, twice as much as any other MMO.
2) the UI/controls. playing daoc after any other MMO or any break i am immediately turned off by daoc's molasses-slow movement and player controls that just aren't up to scratch.
3) being slow to address balance issues / over-nerfing / over-buffing / general attention to balance. I don't know whether this is due to inadequate playtesting, listening too much/not enough to the playerbase or some combo of the two, but both DAOC and WAR have suffered from terrible balance issues (and terrible responsiveness to same). The last few years have definitely seen an improvement in this respect but it still stands out in my mind as a distinctly Mythic issue.
I have little doubt that a DAOC2 that fixed these 2 problems together with a modest marketing budget and graphics facelift would be pretty successful. Nowhere near WOW-killing, but definitely do considerably better than failhammer.

I can only laugh at the gear whine, come on, I've been running toons with the same temp for years, especially casters. Even when I do retemp I've never found it to be all that difficult to get what I need although I do admit I sometimes just don't feel like it do to the headscratching it can sometimes take designing a new temp, getting the gear is the easy part. Also, from what I can tell you can pretty much easily farm some sort of currency and just buy the stuff. The only toon I really needed to retemp was my Ranger but they convienently nerfed them to crap so I never bothered.
About bots, I personally wouldn't like it if I had to play without one, the game is far more enjoyable with buffs than without regardless of what you're doing, there's only two or three classes that I could bear playing without a bot(Friar/Vamp) and even then playing with two toons offeres so much more than just buffs. A certain freeshard has a /bb command, you can summon a bot anywhere whenever you want, the only thing I don't like about it is the timer is too short and it has a HoT effect when you use it, too many fights with Skalds and Mini's especially end up having them CC you and summon one for a heal.

When mythic had the balls to raise the subscription rate to the same rate as WOW,
I found myself wondering if DAoC was worth it. I thought it was. Then I stopped to
consider that I had to have 2 accounts to be competitive and another 2 to be able
to farm items I needed for templates.
Paying double what Wow costs to cover my account and bot just doesn't seem like
a good deal. Sure it comes out to about a buck a day. If I can play everyday, it
was worth the buck. If I can not...
Then Mythic accused me of basically hacking or something when I used the proxy
cards I bought from their in game Dev. Then they took the items I paid for (stole)
without saying exactly what I was accused of or replacing them or even responding
in the time they said they would. Accounts expired and I am not sure I am coming
back or not.
