Why has nobody noticed that the authenticators are made in.. <drum roll> China! I bet some Blizzard employee has cut a deal with not only a Chinese gold farming racket, but also the Chinese manufacturers of the authenticators! Heck, the two Chinese companies could be one and the same!

Seriously!

The interweb has destroyed the brain of yet another youth...

I've missed an obvious joke now and then, but wow.

edit: Thanks for thinking I'm a youth though. I felt a little old and creaky this morning.

It's not the video that gets you, it's the codec or codec installer that gets you.

How often do you change your wow password? (have you ever changed it) ?

You could have had a key logger MONTHS ago and the theives are just now getting around to your account.

Reposting this from august....

http://www.esecurityplanet.com/patches/article.php/3897821/Microsoft-Big-Patch-Tuesday-for-IT-Administrators.htm

Microsoft issued one of its largest collections of security fixes ever on Tuesday, releasing a total of 14 patches that secure 34 vulnerabilities, most primarily in Windows, but also a couple in the Office productivity applications.

from further down...

High on the list of holes that Microsoft suggests plugging first is one that can completely compromise systems running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), XP Professional x64 SP2 and both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 SP2. The Flaw involves how Microsoft's DirectShow MP3 filter processes supported files. All a user would need to do in order to be sideswiped by a "drive-by download" that takes over his or her PC is visit a site that hosts a malicious media file.

Who knows how long these "holes" existed and were exploited before they were finally caught.

Just an example of how one can pick up a malicious file and never know it, never have it show on a virus scan, and still think they are secure.

This is why you need an authenticator.

You as a user can do everything right, and still get infected because of some "hole" that has not been discovered, patched, and filled; either in your OS, browser, or any flash type software.

@OP

I have a hard time feeling sorry for anyone who gets hacked when they don't own an authenticator. Don't order the 2 for $6 teen burgers at lunch. Take the money you saved and buy an authenticator.

EM, how much gold was on your account?

I'm kind of siding with EM here. Just curious.

When I attempted to log in tonight, I found the "Account locked for suspicious activity" message. It seems I've been infiltrated somehow.

I remember reading a thread here a couple months ago that seemed pretty compelling in favour of someone inside Blizzard possibly hacking into accounts.

Here's what I can tell you:

1) I absolutely do not have a keylogger. I do not have an account authenticator. I have never ever shared my account with anyone, nor even given anyone access or the password. I can guarentee all of those things.

2) I have run both virus and malware scans, both of which resulted in 0 problems. I always use Firefox with both adblock and noscript, and have since my last reformat six-ish months ago. I have not downloaded anything other than porn vids and pics over the few days.

Troll or not..I stopped reading there.

Well my account has been fully restored now. Character back in place, seems like everything that should be there is there.

I certainly wasn't looking for any one to feel sorry for me, and you should perhaps re-evaluate your e-importance. I'm genuinely unsure of what happened here and how it could have happened.

On the character deleted I had about 3100g. My 80 mage honestly had less than 5g on her, which Blizzard restored. I tend to spend when I want something.

As far as a 'driveby download' goes, that's also pretty unlikely. Again, my windows 7 is up to date automatically, and I use Firefox + Adblock + No-script (which prevents such downloads). Unless a 'trusted' site had some malicious code, there are not many ways to covertly get code such a keylogger onto my computer.

I use addons, but all were installed manually from Curse. I do not have the curse agent or any other monitoring tools active when I run WoW.

No offense but the theory that Blizzard employees would access your account information so they could steal your gold is pretty stupid.

First of all, if an employee with access to your account information wanted to make some money they'd just steal your credit card information, not your pretend money.

Second, accessing your account information and then your account is going to leave footprints in their system. When you call to complain it would be pretty easy for them to figure out if an employee was behind it. Your little bit of fake money isn't worth getting canned over.

Finally, if a Blizzard employee was so desperate to get their hands on some gold couldn't they just spawn it?

Authenticator - $6.50 .. give or take. Or free if you have a smartphone. Why not just get one and get it out of the way..

Besides, the authenticator is practically free, the $6 bucks pays for shipping pretty much.

They can't, in a recent interview they said they have to play just like us, no free gold or loot.
