I'm sure I read a post wrong somewhere with someone claiming that Rift was dumbed down. I guess that's the latest generic insult? I haven't found a popular MMO in the last decade that wasn't "dumbed down" in one way or another.
Did WoW finally meet its match? I sincerely hope not. I would not want to see Rift have the same "success" issues.
Do I want Rift to be a niche game like LotRO? No. I hope it never devolves down into a costume parade on the official forums.
Will Rift turn into Warhammer? Too early to tell. The devs seem to be a lot more on top of their game and disciplined. They listen to input but don't act on all of it. At least for now.
If they actually manage to insert RvR and/or DF into the endgame, it could be a very happy sandbox for a lot of players for longer than 6 months. That has a lot of other issues associated with it, that is not the focus of this thread.
Will WoW eventually die? Who knows. EQ still seems to be going. Blizzard is following the same economic pattern as its biggest predecessor (see: theory of Cataclysm Expansion attriting current players in favor of potentially attracting new ones.)
Mark Twain's famous quote comes to mind.
I find the thought of WoW's purported "death" to be "greatly exaggerated". <liptwitch>

There are those who play tank classes, and those that tank.
The weapon is only as good as the person wielding it.

When one uses "sandbox" do describe "rift" (or LOTRO, or WOW, or DAoC...), I just have to
Rift (LOTRO, WOW, DAoC, etc...):
Ultima Online:
Both can be fun, but the design is completely different.
Oh, and another little "nerdish" quote about WoW's supposed death...
"I've died any number of times in my life. Or so I've heard."

SWTOR: 50 Jedi Shadow (Tank), 50 Sith Marauder (Annihilation).
LOTRO: Lifetime account, playing very casually.
WoW: Both accounts canceled for now.
GW2: Future Warrior.

Hit level 22 in Rift last night. I am really enjoying the game and will be sticking with hit much past the other WoW alternatives I have tried (LOTR, Aion, Warhammer).
I thought the rifts and invasions would get boring after a while, but not so. Lost track of time last night going from rift to rift in Stonefield and looked at the time and realized that 3 hours had gone by. That hasn't happened to me since WoW. I was just having too much fun.
I don't know what it is about this game that makes me want to keep playing it. I think it isn't one big thing, but a combination of many smaller things. Class and spec variety, rifts, nice dungeon design, well designed world, streamlined questing experience, artifact collecting, public groups, PvP and PvE gameplay variety. Everything adds up to a very fun experience, even if it isn't all 100% original.

I am playing Rift still yet I find myself taking more breaks from it throughout the day then I did with WOW. Of course- a lot of that is because Rift is constantly going down for something. People complain about WOW being down on Tuesdays- well Rift goes down a lot .. Could be because its new and they are still working out the kinks.. Its a fun different game but I really dont see how people wouldnt get bored after 6-9 months of it.

Same kind of arguments about RIFTS were made when AOC/WAR/AION were new. Seriously, broken record.......
If folks like it because its new thats cool, if folks are bored with WOW and want to leave thats cool. Just don't say its innovative or ground breaking and is going to steal away from WOW millions, when its still brand new and hasnt proven itself. When its had 5 years to percolate and several million customers then you can gloat. Otherwise its just too soon to declare victory.
PS. CAN I HAVE YOUR STUFF TO ALL THOSE LEAVING WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can we just get AC3? AC1 updated to newer technology. They can replay the story from day one and it would be better than the tripe we have in the current games. I gave RIFT a chance during beta but the world is too small. The thought of leveling an alt with no deviation or variety to the same point as my main kept it off my shelf. WOW's problem is that the game mechanics are wholly changed for something I do not want to play. I thoroughly enjoy WOW until I hit Cata content, then as I watch my characters hit points go up by 10k at times just breaks it for me.
