It's got me considering signing up, because I'm thinking I'll come back for the expansion anyway, and I know I'm going to get D3...

Sounds a like pretty good deal to me if you are currently and will be in the future, playing WoW and buying Diablo 3.

I wonder what effects, if any, it will have on the dips in WoW subscriptions in between expansions.

Not eligible in all countries, like many south american players can't sign up for it.

Very smart move from blizzard.
they are facing some very stiff competition in the coming months. with this deal, even if people abandon ship, they get say, "launch of GW2 and star wars did not impact our sub numbers significantly"

So they won't lost subs to their own game and they can pad sub numbers for next year, when a bunch quit for the new games or aren't bothered with logging in thanks to D3.....Genius! 
Give me D3 Collector's and Heart of the Swarm for free and we'll talk.
