Depends on where you are. There are religious zealots in the south that are just likely to beat a woman to death for being gay as they would a man.
One of my STRAIGHT female friends actually had a guy throw a rock at her some years back and call her a "fucking dyke" because she was a cast remember of the university's showing of the vagina monologues and was wearing the cast t-shirt that said "I love vaginas"....
Had to go to the hospital and get something around 20 stitches in her forehead because of it.
She is/was even relatively hot. *shrug*
