I'm just fine with requiring some basic ability to speak/read/write english as a requirement for any public office in the US.

That's because you don't hate democracy and arn't scared to death of Spanish speakers.
To understand Arizona you have to consider it's full of old white people who are desperately afraid that spanish-speaking people may one day come and ask for their land back.

There's no possible justification for that law except irrational fear. I've been told here by supporters that:
1. It doesn't even matter because no one who can't speak English could be here legally anyhow.
2. We can't afford to provide them an interpreter. Meanwhile the cost to pass the law and administer the tests is undoubtedly higher than the cost of providing an interpreter in the rare case it might be needed.
3. That English is the "native" tongue of Arizona.
You can tell it's about irrational fear because these same people never apply their arguments to other things like understanding of math or civics or constitutional law or any other things at least as important to someone's ability to serve in elected office.

I think it absurd there are those here who apparently believe this to be a bad decision?
Regardless of the office you hold, be it city, county, state, or federal - the laws, regulations, taxes, fees and ordinances you will be called upon to either draft or vote upon will all be in English.
If you do not have the ability to comprehensively speak, read and write the language your work will be conducted in, you have no business doing that work.
End of discussion.

Doesn't surprise me Koneg is also on the side of big government administering tests to determine whether someone is good enough to run for office or not. |

Until we have a national language (or even a state language) then I don't see how it's even legal. I think its a dumb condition, but its not my dumb state. I live in another dumb state. So do whatever you want there.

Someone incapable of reading, writing or even comprehending the language they will be performing 100% of their work in is utterly useless.
It doesn't surprise me that Yuki is on the side of useless government.

That's a pretty strange opinion.
I worked for a Korean company off and on for years, my boss there didn't speak a word of English (though he was fluent in about 5 other languages), I didn't speak a word of Korean. Didn't keep us from getting work done. He had some very expressive, and funny, hand gestures btw.
