She's not running for national office. She's running for city council of a city near the Mexican border. I'm sure she's more than able to communicate with the people she'd be representing.
Why do they deserve to be denied a choice because of the language spoken? Are they somehow less entitled to choose their representation than English speakers?
Also, there are vetting processes to determine whether or not someone is here legally. Making assumptions based on the language they speak is dumb, and unnecessary.
No kidding. It's the worst kind of oppression of linguistic minorities. If people want to elect a spanish-speaking mayor of their town which probably mostly speaks spanish why not let them? Arizona apparently hates democracy when it speaks spanish.

I kind of agree here or at least be bilingual. I can bet you dollars to donuts that the english only candidate cannot speak spanish well or even at all.

People should really be able to vote in whoever they want. Exceptions to this rule should be very rare.
If good english is not a quality that voters put a high value on, why should BIGGUBAMINT!! make that decision for them.
Most libertarians seem to be part of that group only because it allows them to push racial legislation while pretending its about something else. Often they let the mask slip....

Arizona is one of the most racist states in the country.
It is racist to demand officials speak/write/understand English? They are creating laws, passing ordinances, holding public forums. The ability to speak the native tongue is generally asked for.
I mean..I wouldn't go to China and expect to be able to run for office if I couldn't understand the language.

Of all the possible words you could have chosen, "native" language? Seriously?
English is about as far from the "native" language of Arizona as you can get. Spanish isn't either but it certainly has a better claim than English.
Why can't you let people vote for people they want to vote for? If the people of some city want to vote for a spanish-speaking mayor who cares? Why isn't it up to them to choose the person they want?
America has historically had hundreds of communities where English wasn't the primary spoken language and I'm sure you can find dozens or hundreds of examples of mayors of American towns who spoke English poorly.
Using linguistic chauvinism to bar people from minority linguistic communities from the political procses is a recent phenomenon. The founders would spit on you for it.

If you can't speak English well enough to pass a basic proficiency test, odds are you are not a legal resident. Are there legal residents who can't pass a basic English speaking proficiency test? Sure but I would put that at a very low percentage in the class.
If you can't work well enough in the language that the vast majority speak...why should I have to pay for someone to interpret for you? Go take a few classes, get a *BASIC* working grasp of English and run for office.

OK..so in your eyes..and according to your statement, it would be peachy for some *insert non english speaking citizen* to come in, barely speak the language, and run for mayor/city council/President.
The people did choose. They chose to elect the officials who passed the law stating that if you couldn't read/write/speak english, you are barred from public office.
So once again, as long as the people choose what YOU believe/want..it is ok. If they don't, they are racists, haters and backwater rednecks.
You Libs sure are easy to figure out.
