Uh, I have no idea how it'd work with an older game. I know when I used to play L4D on Steam you could just invite people to play with you. Sorta like how Xbox live works.

Edit:

Holy crap now I get what you guys meant about building a wonder. I wanted to be a Russian to build the great pyramids! That stuff takes way too long to do off of only 2 cities.

Ok, so I guess the expansions work independently of each other?

I've used hamachi to play civ4 with other people.. it takes so long though

And frankie, I'm usually a fan of peaceful strategies as well. You'll just want to do some good diplomacy as well. Share a religion with your neighbors is the easiest way.. Once you learn the leader's personalities, you'll realize which will/wont declare war, which ones will love if you if trade with them(tech whores(pacal, mansa etc), which ones just wont talk to you ever(just whores(shaka, toku, etc), and which ones only like you if you're their religion(religious whores(isabella etc).

And just use beyond the sword xpac, the other clients are just if you want to play older versions.

Yea honestly the combat part of this game just seems so, slow? It holds my attention because the tech tree is FREAKING REDICULOUS.

I was kind of hoping for a campaign type thing though.

There are scenarios to play(and usually they're pretty cool).

But yeah, just scout with your initial war/scout(try and scout out potential city sites and meet neighbors), and settle where you start(it's right 90% of the time, dont worry about the other 10% yet). Build a worker first, and tech the technology that allows your to improve the tiles near your new capitol. After the worker, build warriors till size 3-4, then switch to settler and get yourself a second city.

You should have ~1.5 workers per city. Oh, and make sure to turn tile yields/resources on(it's a button above the minimap). It'll make it easier to see good city sites.

This will be a good start for you.

Also, download this mod: http://civ4bug.sourceforge.net/BUGMod.html

It will make life SOOOO much easier. To plan cities inside the mod, i think the hotkey is ctrl+x.. or alt+x it's been a while.

I actually only average 50-100, I don't do a million clicks to tell 1 unit to move to a spot. And I'm a pretty average player.
