I played Civ1, and then skipped all the way to Civ4 (darn MMO addiction inbetween). I did play MOO and MOO2, skipped MoO3. I still play MOO on occasion.

I guess 4 started weak compared to 3, but the expansions fixed it right up. With the expansions, it's a great game. It's also pretty well balanced between civs at the higher difficulties (well, except Incas Quechua-rushing AIs on small maps).

BUG and BetterAI mods make the standard game even better (BUG is interface enhancements, BetterAI improves AI play)
Get them both as a package here
