I play Civ 5 and Alpha Centauri. I wish they would come up with a system to make the hard difficulties actually difficult rather than just increase the production rate and other cheats for the NPCs. Otherwise they are awesome games.

You know, I don't think I ever played a civ game.

Give it a try, seriously. Go grab Civ IV, you can get the whole package for cheap now and it's hella addicting.

I haven't played Civ 4 in years, I should really try it again. I got Civ 5 and boy was that ever a waste. I enjoyed Alpha Centauri a lot because you could customize units and I guess the Sci-fi stuff was a good hook too. My favorite 4x type of game is Master of Orion, I still crack out a game or two of both 1 and 2 every couple of months.

Post a save you are having trouble with. Preferably the initial (4000BC) save as well.

I win Monarch regularly, and Immortal if I put some effort into it.

Or if you go post on civfanatics in the strategy forum, you'll get a few dozen posters who are all better than me. I play so little single-player that I don't have things like peaceweights for various leaders memorized. And there are hordes of games with details the whole way to read about.

Winning past Prince just takes a few things. Build more workers. Learn to love the whip. Stop building wonders. Specialize a couple cities.

Civ4 has a mod called Better AI that makes it play MUCH stronger. Enough that they toned down some of the NPC cheats in the higher levels.

All great advice, but it's all timing. You can build wonders, but all in veeeery certain circumstances. But, I'm also willing to evaluate saves, like they do on civfanatics, and help with "crap i've lost" circumstances. Biggest thing: dont underestimate workers. You want a lot of them.

It's been a joke several times. Guy is reporting on a game, and early on he says "I build my first wonder - 28 Chariots!"

Wonders are a luxury. Excepting Oracle, Taj Mahal, and Hanging Gardens, it's better to build a stack of shiny maces instead. All the other wonders work fine when you take them from somebody else.

Buildings are the same. I tried to build every building in every city when I played Prince. Now a lot of them spend half the game with a Granary, Courthouse, and either a Library+University or Barracks+Forge

Yeah usually it's more hammer effecient to build military and take the wonder you want.. but, some you can easily integrate into your strategy(oracle, taj, kremlin etc). Or if you have a neighbor that goes the music line first, and you plan on going to war with them, denying them statue of zeus is pretty key. It's a horribly wonder, but sucks so bad when the enemy has it.

I usually only build granary->culture building(unless i'm creative), then put the city on building wealth.. Unless I have every city spamming tanks or cavalry or something then they get barracks.. Only specialized cities will get the forge, rax, library, uni etc.. Unless it's a game where I just have 6 cities, then you need 6 libraries and universities for oxford etc.

I'm a huge fan of Great People economy. You can bulb the crap out of early game although cottages will benefit more later. But the bulbing allows you a fast liberalism(if you can diplo right and stay out of war), which you can grab a key military tech with. Turn off science and spam cannons, or cavalary, or whatever you happen to get. (tech liberalism till 1 turn left, then check the diplo screen every turn to know when the enemies can finish it).

This game sounds too confusing, and I used to play SM:Alpha Centauri when I was in elementary school.
