I thought the series was fan-fricken-tastic! I hate that I don't have HBO. 
The books are even better.

Pretty good Fantasy book series...not my favorite, but pretty good. It's gotten so many people reading the books (so I guess this is a good thing)...it's 'new' for a lot of people and they act like they just discovered it all by themselves and want to tell you about how good it is. It's like, "Ummmm yeah I know". "I'm on Book 3, what Book are you on?" "yeah I read them years ago, and then re-read them waiting forever on A Dance With Dragons..." "Oh. Don't tell me what happens."
I DO like how HBO has committed to doing the series right (high production value).
rest assured, we're all glad to find that you're not an arrogant asshole.

He means book four, A Feast for Crows. The first three are all equal in quality, in that that are the best fantasy written today. Even the AFFC and now the fifth book are still really, really good. If you know Jordan, think what happened to him after about four books too (but not as badly in this case). Basically he has become so wildly successful that the editors aren't taking a needed hand to help keep the work under control and sweat it down to the highest of quality. There are a lot of places you can look up more info, but I won't say more at the risk of spoilers.
Jordan is my favorite author (Ask Tai or Lyndrek to confirm) but I am around page 250 or so on Game of Thrones now and like this. This is turning out to be pretty good. I wont say I like him better than Eddings yet, but if he can stay consistant, I may like him better than Feist and a few others. Anyways, I always wait a few months after I finish a series to see how I rate it.
The TV show was awesome though and I can see how they changed a few things now from the books, but the quality is excellent. Even my mother fell in love with the show after I told her to watch it last night and today. I almost want to watch the TV Show again, which is something I have only done for Band of Brothers.
Spartacus will need to wait now

My suggestion is call your cable company for a short term deal on HBO. Watch the first series on demand, then watch the second once it starts.
