Whatcha think about Brandon Sanderson and what he's done/doing to the series?

My personal opinion is he's gotten a few mannerisms of characters wrong, but overall I've been fairly impressed.

I am taking a break from WoT currently so I haven't read the Sanderson novels. I am currently reading Mistborn which is pretty damn good, so I am optimistic on how he handles WoT.

I love the people who think this is a revelation...

Pretty good Fantasy book series...not my favorite, but pretty good. It's gotten so many people reading the books (so I guess this is a good thing)...it's 'new' for a lot of people and they act like they just discovered it all by themselves and want to tell you about how good it is. It's like, "Ummmm yeah I know". "I'm on Book 3, what Book are you on?" "yeah I read them years ago, and then re-read them waiting forever on A Dance With Dragons..." "Oh. Don't tell me what happens."

I DO like how HBO has committed to doing the series right (high production value).

rest assured, we're all glad to find that you're not an arrogant asshole.

I'll take arrogance over bitchiness any day of the week.

I'll pass on both, actually

I don't know - I just can't get into it. It may not even be Sanderson, since Jordan wrote parts - but the whole thing just seems off a bit.

At least we don't have to read 20 chapters of Nynaeve tugging her braid.

Just watched a bit about season 2, they've been filming in Iceland for the "north of the wall" episodes, and it just looks incredible. I can't wait to see it in the show. They said they aren't doing CGI for any of the scenery/mountains other than the wall itself.

I'm so looking forward to Season 2. Yay!
And along the highjack theme - I stupidly thought WoT was done, so I've been re-reading the whole damn series. Considering that I gave up on it about a decade ago and wasn't going to return to it until the series had been completed, I just about siht myself when I read the foreword for The Gathering Storm by Sanderson and discovered that the final book had been chopped into 3, not 2 separate books.

Elitist.

Yeah she's down to 'wanting to tug on her braid' only about 3-4 times a book.

And without the 'smoothes her dress' and 'folds her arms under her breasts' lines...Sanderson has lost about 200 pages/book of text.

I've enjoyed Sanderson's original works, but I can't say they rank even in my top 10 of the fantasy genre. His allomancy system is really cool, but it doesn't carry the burden of an epic fantasy series on its back. And after TWOM I am prepared to say that I don't think he is up to the task of Jordan's legacy, even tho I also am equally grateful to stop seeing the braid-tugging filler chapters getting cut down to size. As much as Jordan's village wisdom and other female characters occupy a less exciting portion of the narrative, they feel real, and gender politics is a big part of the Wheel of Time's themes and authority as a work of literature. If you read Sanderson's Mistborn you will have trouble remembering that his protagonist Vin is supposedly female, on the other hand.

Yeah he doesn't write female characters particularly female. They're just guys with lady parts.

Jordon on the other hand...the wonder girls were/are so frustrating, their statements, actions, and emotional states...he definitely tapped into the female psyche there. Although, pretty sure no three women would share one man...that one is pure male fantasy.
