Dang... yeah I would stay away from that one, crazy drama though..
But yeah if I were Dave I would really just say **** that to her and work on doing his best at becoming a single dad and get a good divorce lawyer because there's no way a court could be dumb enough to actually reward her custody

My advice: Get the kids out of there. They don't need the drama, don't need to see what was once the Mom and Dad relationship melt down into complete chaos even further than it already has. speak with your peers and see if as a collective you all can begin baby sitting them, and keeping them until their parent's home life can clear up some, no matter what that clarity ends up resembling. They don't need to see how that sausage gets made. Plus it will let mom and dad figure themselves out.

If you do something like this, send them to ONE home, do not shuffle them around from one place to another. Their life is sh*t enough already without being made a to feel special needs.

Don't people read the OP?
the kids, and families all have a long term relationship. Walking away from this/expelling the family because of their problems especially when kids are involved sends the wrong message to everyone else in your circle of friendships and between parents/kids.
I think its great that they have friends like you who DON'T run away from problems to this degree.
Stay supporting this guy, but be very clear that if he continues to fuel the fire, you (and others) can no longer help him.
