He seems to be the one trying...
He's staying in the situation. What are the kids learning when mom comes home from getting pounded by her boyfriend and dad is pissed off/hurt trying to hide it? Telling me that he's able to insulate them from the situation? His heart may be in the right place (keeping the family together), but my (likely dumb lol) opinion is the situation is impacting his children more than him taking them out of the situation would.

I'm not gonna fault him for trying to keep the family together. That's a noble thing and it's at the expense of his own happiness, trust and (for lack of a better phrase) sense of masculinity. But there's kids involved and he should REALLY sit down and think about whether a family with a cheating whore wife that's already tried to off herself and is in the looney bin is REALLY the best environment for them.

I'd be most worried about the welfare of the kids. Sounds like she is seriously a whack-job and could pull a Susan Smith.
