It's been consistently interpreted to mean only anal sex since the very beginning. You are looking at the english translation without paying any attention to the hebrew and the rabbinical interpretation of that hebrew.
That bit of leviticus prohibits ONLY male on male anal sex. It doesn't prohibit any sexual conduct of any kind between women and it doesn't prohibit any other kind of contact between men. That is what it meant to the Jews when Jesus lived.

If they knew then its probably not so bad - hes just vocalizing his feelings.
If you really think about it though , the person comng out has had years to come to terms with the situation. The rest of the fanily that loves or cares about the person only has moments to come to terms with it so it makes sense that theyre going to feel awkward.
