If they knew then its probably not so bad - hes just vocalizing his feelings.
If you really think about it though , the person comng out has had years to come to terms with the situation. The rest of the fanily that loves or cares about the person only has moments to come to terms with it so it makes sense that theyre going to feel awkward.
What is there to come to terms with? He happens to like other dudes, does it in any way affect your life besides the knowledge that he happens to like to play hide the sausage with other men?
It should be no more traumatic then knowing that your cousin now happens to cheer for a different football team then you, it's not supposed to be awkward.
People need to think less of themselves and empathize more with others and stop being so f'kin backwards, conservative and retarded.

Not if they grown up in an environment where it's not frowned upon or looked upon as a immoral stigma.. It's not like there's a gay vs straight fight going on inside them, it's the outside projecting it's morals and stupidity upon a being that has at it's core the want to belong in a herd and be accepted and "normal", western civilization is just now turning from a few hundred years of backwards christian social ultra-conservatism takes a while for a society to shrug off all that stupid.

I'd say if you're a religious bigot and cite bible passages to support your hatred then you'd have to stone your wife and daughters if they talk back and sell people into slavery etc etc..

I dont know what kids are taught today but in my day... I didnt even know what gay was when i was a little boy. Every childrens book had a mom and a dad.. So i was indoctrinated; realizing youre not going to fit into that is rough.
Its no different than feeling like a misfit for any number of other issues you might have in your life though. Actually, being a misfit because youre gay is not even that bad since there are so many gay people out there.
Bonk is a misfit for instance and he has had a rough life (worse than most gays)...

Well sexuality is often not an issue until puberty, when that strikes can vary. I myself was sexually mature (ie: ejaculation) at about 12. I always thought girls were interesting so for me this wasn't a issue.
I think parents have to become more open about discussing sexuality with their children, and if so I mean beyond birds and bees and if they are incapable then council can be had. I would not let it up for the schools to explain sexuality to my children, I'd rather do that myself even if it would be awkward as hell..
