He said everyone in the family knew he was gay already but it was very awkward for everyone when he came out.

I don't even know the kid and I feel bad for him. The coworker "James" said he looked him in the eye and shook his hand when he was told, but the kid looked so ashamed. I told James he was probably ashamed because he knew James' views on it. (i bit back my congratulations for not treating him like a leper remark, I actually respect him a little more for going that far.) He asked, probably rhetorically, why he couldn't just stay in the closet and I said it's probably tough hiding who you are and living a lie.

James mentioned the poor kids mother and I said she'd love him no matter what. Kinda odd to me that a follower of a religion dedicated to love has a hard time understanding that concept. I made sure to throw in "natural" as much as possible, the guy obviously didn't want to press his beliefs and looked so uncomfortable, it was priceless. He kept saying it's just lust and I kept saying, natural lust like everyone has.

This is the same co worker who predicts the world will end in a war between five superpowers, as foretold in the bible.

He understands love.

What he is struggling with is reconciling that to the negative feelings he has been taught to have towards homosexuality.

Fundamentalists choose words over people. It's a learned behavior, and one that is frightening to let go of.

Just like he should have compassion for his relative you should have compassion for his ignorance.

I don't have compassion for bigotry. There is no pity in compassion. I do respect him and his right to his views, but he brought it up, so I spoke my thoughts on the matter.

I have less of a problem with people being gay than people murdering, stealing, raping, lying, etc. The Bible says all of that stuff is wrong, but it also says we all screw up and we all need forgiveness and grace. I never realized this as much as I did when my best friend from middle school through college, the maid of honor at my wedding, came out of the closet. She tried to avoid relationships with women, even got married to a really wonderful guy and thought trying to live contrary to her feelings would help get rid of them, but in the end she was living a lie and hurting herself and others. She did not choose to be gay any more than I chose to be straight. I don't understand it but I do know that she's still one of my best friends and I can't stop being her friend over something like this...I can't imagine how sh*tty a friend that would make me.

The Bible doesn't say being gay is wrong.

The closest it really comes is some of Paul's ranting in some of the letters. But that's just Paul being a douchecanoe and he hardly limits that to bashing gay people. Paul was just a mean-spirited little bastard.

As I can remember, historically as well is biblically (not the same thing), Paul/Saul was consistently a huge asshole to everyone around him.

"Hey, I'm a Jew. I'm going to go around killing Christians....You know what, I want to be a Christian now. I think I'll go around killing Jews instead" - Saul/Paul.

Leviticus explicitly forbids homosexual relations, however Christians are not bound under the law given to Moses.

The letters Paul wrote were to advise churches of how to resolve issues they were having, so they are written with the customs of society in mind. He makes it clear that the only law Christians are under is the law of Christ which is love.

I do not think Jesus would endorse the discrimination against homosexuals that happens today.
