Well I personally believe humanity is an irrational species. Religion serves good purposes in that it helps be the glue that holds society together, encourages morality, and most importantly helps to be an emotional cushion to help people better deal with death and suffering in the world

Is it mentally ill to put a suffering animal out of it's misery?
Some people are never going to find relief. There may not be a Heaven, but that doesn't mean they should have to live through Hell.

I agree what they want is really a release from their situation, but there are people who will never find that release.
So, what are they to do?
The only real release from their situation involves humbling themselves and getting professional help and help from their friends and relatives first. Then they must do what it takes to get healthy again.
I think my brain is still crazy in fact I think it was always crazy but now I'm not feeling the dark, hopeless depression I was feeling years ago

It's all in how you look at it.
If someones life is so bad they can't stand it, they shouldn't.
That doesn't mean ending life itself, it means ending the way their life currently is. Somewhere in the world there is a place full of people that person has never met who would probably enjoy talking to them about stuff. Someone in that place probably owns a company that needs that person to do stuff for it so they will pay them in return for doing it. There are probably apartments there that need tenets, stores that need shoppers, girls that need to be ogled, urinals that need to be pissed in......all that stuff.
A plane ride, or a bus trip, or even a bummed ride from someone off the side of the road and next thing you know....that person is in that place. With all the old crap from the old lifestyle gone, and all kinds of new crap to discover.

Does it work 100% of the time?
I have a hard time believing it does. Some of those people are just going to suffer even more before finally finding relief when they eventually die.

 Wow, how depressing is that.
In every culture in the world there is a belief in God, gods, or some kind of higher power. There is a study that proposes humans are 'wired' to believe in god. That there is a part of the brain set up to believe in god.
For you to believe " It's mentally ill to believe in a heaven", might be a telling sign that you are not in a fit mental condition.
