There's a cultural component to this as well.

You get pretty used to being called Pet Names in the south. Getting called 'sugar' and 'sweetie' by the ladies and 'buddy', 'pal', 'chief' by the guys is pretty normal.

Just like it's normal to here someone address all female strangers as 'maam'. Which will get you stabbed in the north - women up there DO NOT LIKE being called Maam.

ive never used or met someone who used the word "chief" to address someone....

Deal more with medical, fire, police, or even Navy personnel. "Chief" is not necessarily referring to injuns

Chief of the watch, chief of the boat, master chief, chief petty officer, fire chief, police chief etc etc ad infinitum.

Chief was used in some TV show about 10 years ago or so which made it popular.

I guess that's why I never really thought of it as being insulting. Still don't.

I've lived in the south so much it's just normal. I get called hun and sweetie all the time by women working in various businesses I go to, gas station, grocery store, bank, and so on. Don't run into chief or captain as much but it happens. Never bothered me, but then.....I've never thought someone was being intentionally disrespectful to me. Well, never cared if they were anyway. It's funny, not offensive. Why the hell would I care?

ok i wasn't thinking in the context of legit titles....being in the Marines i heard several enlisted navy addressed as their rank sometimes containing "chief"....ie master chief, snr chief, or just chief

or a chief warrant officer if we just didn't call him "gunner"

The whole living in the south thing, as I said, plays it's part but it would be almost impossible for me, a Navy guy, to think of calling someone Chief (which is an actual title as well as one of respect in the military) as insulting.
