There's a cultural component to this as well.

You get pretty used to being called Pet Names in the south. Getting called 'sugar' and 'sweetie' by the ladies and 'buddy', 'pal', 'chief' by the guys is pretty normal.

Just like it's normal to here someone address all female strangers as 'maam'. Which will get you stabbed in the north - women up there DO NOT LIKE being called Maam.

You got that right sweetie

Haha. Possibly.

Would certainly explain why I am a blonde and everyone else in my family is a red head

I don't see "chief" as condescending in most uses by people. Condescending people manage to sound condescending no matter WHAT they say. Terms and phrases used by a larger group just as a habit or for use of comfort (as filler, etc) are not condescending by nature.

It really depends on context.

Growing up, it was always a term I associated with respect. My Dad was often referred to as Chief, but he was rated a CW5. It's a term of respect that some of his former soldiers still use for him. As such, I carried that into my adulthood and use it in that vein.

It has gotten me in trouble a few times though - I'll call someone that without thinking about it, meaning respect...and they get all offended. But then again I do work in the Indian Gambling industry.

I think it is more about the tone and facial expression than any particular words. imho 'boy' and 'son' tend towards condescension far more than 'chief' when dealing with random strangers.
