It really depends on context.

Growing up, it was always a term I associated with respect. My Dad was often referred to as Chief, but he was rated a CW5. It's a term of respect that some of his former soldiers still use for him. As such, I carried that into my adulthood and use it in that vein.

It has gotten me in trouble a few times though - I'll call someone that without thinking about it, meaning respect...and they get all offended. But then again I do work in the Indian Gambling industry.

Is it just me or does this get used way too much lately.

Every "buddy" of mine when we see each other it is a race to see which of us can use it first.

I am starting an anti buddy trend where I will start greeting all of my friends with hey a**hole.

Probably wont go over well but it will make me chuckle.
