This kid was innocent and Zimmerman had no valid reason to suspect him of committing a crime. His suspicion was based purely on bias.
You don't know any of that for sure.
Zimmerman called 911, and that call recording has been released. There is absolutely no doubt that his suspicion was based purely on bias. Worse, the dispatcher told him repeatedly to stop following the kid.

I'm wondering now, if anything short of Zimmerman going to prison will be acceptable anymore. With the president even weighing in on the issue, it doesn't seem to me as if there is any other outcome that will not cause mass riots.

If Zimmerman had followed him done the driveway with his gun drawn, and the kid had tackled him in self-defense, would you still claim Zimmerman was blameless and it was all the kid's fault?
As far as we know, he might have had the gun drawn. Or reached for it when the kid asked him why he was following him.
We can all speculate as much as we want. But, there are all sorts of plausible scenarios which show that Zimmerman committed a serious crime. Certainly enough doubt that it should go before a Grand Jury.

I think Zimmerman needs to go to jail - the question will be one of 'intent'. Did he intend to kill him or was it all a mess that he started that went horribly wrong because of his mental problems. Zimmerman will need to prove that he didn't intend to kill him - the fact that he had his gun on him, didn't heed the warnings of the 911 dispatcher, and called him a racial slur does not bode well but you never know.
