There's a leap going from the police saying the witnesses back up Zimmerman's claim of self-defense...which isn't quite accurate, itself...to your saying eyewitnesses saw the whole thing going down...which is not true as far as I can tell.
The only eyewitness account I've seen says he saw someone in a white T-Shirt on top of someone wearing a red shirt. The kid was wearing a gray hoody. Also, if Zimmerman had pulled a gun on him, or, even acted threateningly, the kid is perfectly justified in defending himself. Is that what happened? I don't know. Was what Zimmerman says happen what happened? I don't know. Elements of Zimmerman's story don't make sense, though. So, put the case in front of a Grand Jury.

He initiated the entire encounter.
He was warned repeatedly by competent persons to not do what he was doing.
He had a 100 pound weight advantage over the super dangerous kid with the bag of skittles.
There is no way any reasonable or objective observer can see a physical confrontation between these two as anything but one sided in Zimmerman's favor.
Whether the kid started the fight or not, that STILL does not justify the use of deadly force. THAT requires a fear of grave bodily harm - and there's no way an unarmed 140 pound kid generates that kind of fear.
He is and should be going to prison for responding with deadly force - as deadly force was clearly not justifiable.
If you think otherwise, listen to Massad Ayoob. He is probably the most respected authority on use of deadly force in the United States:

The dude had a history of overreacting and calling police every time someone farted too loud. He was basically following this kid around certain he was up to to good, calling 911 and insisting the kid was up to something. He was armed.
Then he suddenly turned his back and let down his guard and this kid started wailing on him.
