It is an Emmy winning series that had the biggest draw of any HBO series ever for it's first season. The show isn't going anywhere.

New viewers like eodell will be turned off if they arn't already. The whole thing is a big steaming pile of fan service for people who read the books. It's borderline incomprehensible if you haven't.

I think its going to get cancelled. This show is going to lose viewers and it looks expensive to make.
- too many characters, too much dialogue, confusing to follow, many of them look the same. Needs a lot more action. They wait till the end and give a cliffhanger, half the time its a cliffhanger you dont even care about.
good thing you don't know shit LOL. it won't get cancelled.

I read the first book and that's it, but I have some familiarity from people talking about it here on the outpost. I'm also a super genius!!1
And there were bits that were pretty hard to follow even so. The scenes with Stannis would have been borderline incomprehensible, for example.
A large part of the problem is how they insist on doing things like the books do by doing 5 minutes of each subplot each episode. By the time the viewer adjusts to which story they're talking about it's over for that episode and they have to readjust to the next one.
From my understanding more and more stories get introduced as the series goes on, so it's just gonna get worse. By season 4-5 they'll have like 3 minutes per subplot.
They ought to be a little bolder and do what I gather he ended up doing himself in the later books and breaking things up so that in a given episode they only address half the subplots, and then deal with the other half in the next episode. That'd give them a solid 10-15 minutes per subplot, enough time to get things moving more significantly.

Yup, the story lines only grow in number and get more involved. His later books actually overlap because he had to split the story lines out into different book just so the readers could follow easier.

That's what I'm saying they ought to have done already for the TV adaption. Although it could just be on an episode by episode basis.
Rather than trying to cover joffrey + john snow + the cripple kid in winterfell + the king in the north + stannis + dragon lady all in the first episode (and I probably forgot someone), they should have picked three-four of those stories and done 15ish minutes on each, and then done 15ish minutes on the other half in episode 2. Right now it jumps around too much for the medium of a one-hour TV episode. Six different stories going on in one one-hour segment is not good design.

I never read the books but I was able to watch and understand the first season with no problems.
This episode though I was kind of confused on a few things, but it's not bothersome enough to make me stop watching though.

Less than half of the people i know watching it read the books, and they're all following it not only completely, but fanatically. It's a non-issue.
