As for “won't actually increase their profitâ€, a reworked and updated DAoC 2 would cost $15 to $20 million to produce. 800k boxes sold would gross about $32 million, net about $12 million, and a completely digital distribution would push the net considerably higher. With only 200k subs the game would gross about $36 million in the first year and completely recoup the cost of development (even if the game were given away free and players just paid the sub, the game still breaks even by the end of the first year).
The hitch in the entire thing, a clueless Mythic would be doing the rebuilding and Mythic is still showing that they really do not have a clue how to keep their brilliant people from taking a great concept and running amok with it. For a reworked DAoC to have a chance Mythic would need new and decisive leadership by someone with a clear picture of what a typical MMO customer needs in a game.
You do talk some guff! Stop spouting such vague conjecture. You do not have access to anything remotely tangible to base your estimations on. If such margins were so easy to come by a company such as EA would have taken advantage long ago.

Basic server leasing costs, maintenance fees, etc. . . are available on line.
Wages/Salaries for developers/coders, including/excluding benefits, etc. . . is available on line.
DAoC initial development (with 24 people) and cost information, etc. . . is available on line.
WH cost of development along with a list of departments, department heads, coders, developers, etc. (a complete list of those who worked on WH) is available on line.
Many games, including many F2P games publish subs, net, gross, server numbers, numbers of developers working on the game, etc.
DAoC now has a few servers (a few with low blade quantity) and one full server.
DAoC has approximately 20k subs (based on Sanya’s statements about sub numbers compared to peak log in numbers)
Login numbers/stats are available on the Herald and at darkzone.
Based on sub information, server population, etc. . . gross DAoC subscription revenue can be accurately estimated.
Etc. . . .
There is a huge amount of info that is available on line.
It does not take a rocket scientist to wade through the numbers and estimate the cost of reworking DAoC classic and publishing it as a new game. I understand that perhaps the data is overwhelming to some, that does not make the evaluation/compilation a “vague conjectureâ€. The estimate of cost is fairly close.
The huge conjecture for some would be the possible popularity of a DAoC 2. This is where things could be argued.
If it were built correctly, IMO DAoC 2 could have a viable number of subs. This is not just wild speculation. DAoC is a far better concept than WoW. It just is. That is not conjecture, it is a fact.
WoWs implementation is far, far superior to the implementation of DAoC. It just is. That is also a fact. The evidence is all over the web, in the game, etc. . . .
The implementation of DAoC tends to anger the typical MMO player. Just look at the number of angry/whining VN posts by DAoC players back when DAoC had 250k subs and compare it to the number of angry/whining posts on the WoW boards today when WoW has over 10 million who could be posting angry things. The numbers are very similar. Percentages and comparisons indicate Mythic has a knack for completely pissing off its customers.
If you do not have an interest in wading through large quantities of numbers
or
If you think DAoC has always done so poorly because DAoC is just a horribly inferior game concept to most other games (like WoW).
Then I can see why you may think that my estimates have little bases in reality.
The numbers are the numbers. Player’s psychology is what it is.
Convincing EA that DAoC could be revived, this would be a huge uphill fight. Based on how gullible EA was to the pabulum that spewed from MJ when MJ convinced EA to dump $millions and $millions into MJ’s vision of WH, the evidence indicates that EA is not very savvy about player psychology, about game direction, about what players need vs. what players spout that players want, etc. . . . I am sure that EA has some brilliant people, I do not mean to denigrate them, but based on what happened it seems that EA sometimes does not seem to have a clue.
If EA is lacking a bit when it comes to determining what is a great concept (like DAoC) and does not fully understand the psychology behind how Mythic/MJ killed such a great concept, then there are obvious and clear obstacles in convincing a somewhat clueless EA of the value and possibilities of funding a DAoC 2.
I fully understand why EA would not fund a DAoC 2. I am sure, based on DAoCs declining subscription numbers, DAoC 2 would seem like Fulton’s Folly.

Make DAOC free to play and I'll start playing again. It's that simple. I'm not paying a monthly fee for a 10 year old game with little to no development anymore.
This. Not to mention I hate the recent "balance" changes that have been brought in.

I know what would get you back into the game. The ability to make Transvestites. I read the thread about you in the Warhammer page. Really Columba that is what you are into?

This is a retarded idea. The game sucked then far more then it does now, you just want to remember the good and forget the bad.

I played with him back in the day he is one of those players that always complained about everything. We would always ask him if he hated the game so much why do you play it and he always responded with "I don't hate the game"
I am amazed he is still complaining about the game.
I started playing the game again about a month ago and it's hard for me to get past the graphics. The game could really use a complete graphical overhaul.

Eh, I still like the graphics better then the cartoony crap I see in RIFT and WoW and such. WAR graphics weren't too hateful, but in many ways DAoC graphics seem more realistic to me.

I love the Art Direction of DaoC but I'm saying they could do with a high res texture upgrade and higher polygon count models. They can still have the same art direction just I would like to see an updated version.
EQ1 did it a few times if you look at the graphics at launch to what they are now it's a huge difference.
