My issue is that there is no censensus on how much money people are actually losing due to piracy.
Every study contradicts the one before it. Hollywood just totals up all prices for every hit a torrent gets and calls it the price tag of piracy, but REAL studies often show that people who would PAY for the IP in question will pay for it no matter what. I think a recent white house study came to the conclusion taht the costs of piracy have been vastly exaggerated...
It probably has. I know people who pirate a LOT of movies a year, they also BUY a lot of movies a year.
If they totally lost the ability to pirate, would they purchase MORE movies than they already do? A few for sure, but they certainly would NOT purchase all the movies they are pirating.
I know people who pirate movies and purchase nothing and wouldn't purchase anything if they lost the ability either.
So yes, I think they do lose money but not as much as they think they do.
Also, lets not forget that people will say outrageous things to prove a point. Politicians blow things out of proportion all the time to scare or convince people into their view, so seeing companies tell Politicians they are "losing many billions! do something" is only natural.
Again, this all goes back to price as well. I do buy BluRays when they drop below $10 and are for sale at WalMart or BestBuy, I just don't buy them at more expensive prices and why should I when we know you will have to buy them again in 5 years when the new 4k resolution screens become standard.
Screw them.

The model needs to change radically. They are just going to keep trying to milk it until they collapse under their own weight and fail. Considering the money they throw around and legal clout they have bought with it it'll take a long time and they'll do a lot of damage before that happens.
I buy lots of movies and tv boxed sets but I also Netflix a hell of a lot and use other avenues to watch shows. If there was a reasonably priced source online for downloading movies without all the DRM and other crap I would be all over it even if I could just as easily get the movie another way. That would require it be customer oriented and be well put together... high bandwidth, good selection, no crap like special players or drm, etc. Yes something I can download and do whatever the hell I want to with it. Make it so you are paying for the package and not the actual movie/song. It is the same way for me for movies.
I will buy a boxed set (tv shows or movie collection) even if I only watch it once and even knowing I could've downloaded it in the time it took me to go get the boxed set. It is worth it to me... that is why I do it. That is also why I don't go to theaters... it isn't worth it to me. It is as simple as that. They need to adjust their business model to the new reality and innovate instead of litigating.

and people think courts and jails are overcrowded now?
funny that a recent congressman that came for a visit supports this, but blasted the Bureau of Prisons for overcrowding and having too many staff and rejecting money for new prisons.
hell we have prisons waiting 2 years to be activated!
and this is yet another fine example of Lobbyists in full control in DC.

For a long time you've not been able to get Garth Brooks songs on youtube, now they are also going away on grooveshark. I think someone doesn't understand how advertizing works. I often check out songs on a CD like that before I buy it, and, it also exposes me to other songs I may not have heard.
Well, some Brooks songs are on there, but not all.

you don't go to jail for petty theft, you shouldn't go to jail for copyright infringement, nor should anyone be fined thousands of dollars.

Korn is losing too much money from piraters! Its at the point where they only make profits from touring.
uh no musical act makes their money from cd's they get like pennies for each cd sold.
they sell 2 million cd's and get paid 5 cents per cd, you do do the math....
All musical acts make their cash from touring...
metallica is one of the few bands who actually make money on their CDs, they get like a dollar per cd sale instead of pennies like others.

the issue I see in it is this, how many people were not planning to see whatever movie in the theater because they didn't think they'd like it. They then watched a crappy cam copy online and decide that it's too good to miss.... this is GAINED revenue.
The person that can't afford to go see a movie is not watching it at home INSTEAD of the theater, they would not be paying for it regardless. This is Not a gain or loss of revenue.
