if the argument is that its going to somehow relieve of us of middle eastern oil addiction and the potential to contaminate 1700 miles of US land....then yes

LOL at people who thought any of this oil was for us. Did you know that the US exports refined gasoline *now*, is currently producing more crude than at any time in history (including under W), and that all of this oil was going to be shipped to Asia after we refined it?

There were possibly jobs at stake here, the only reason to give it any consideration at all. Truth is, though, the full environmental study was going to take another year. Since the repubs forced a decision *now* in the payroll tax cut extension bill, the only responsible decision available was to reject it.

Take heart, though, that the administration is allowing TransCanada to explore an alternate route, so this might still get done, just not before the election.

Fixed, its to bad the morons cant see what really happened. Obama was given a timeline by congress. The Obama administration could not or did not meet that deadline. So rather than make an ill informed decision about trusting an oil company (man that's just prime) and lacking the time to further investigate the issue he said he would not support it. Guess congress should stop dictating to the white house.

Besides the fact is allowing an oil company (any oil company) to build pipeline across prime ecological areas as well as over a primary water table for the middle of the country is way past stupid. The full effects of B.P. and their lack of maintaining the pipelines in Alaska as well as the budget cuts put in place by repubs to the people in charge of checking those pipelines for irregularities has been for the most part not been brought up. These oil companies do not care. They wont clean up the mess when it happens, and it will, and they will skate on the cleanup just like they did in Valdez and in the golf of mexico.

Like anyone cares about people in Nebraska

The tar sands need to be mined because it is a semisolid... then it needs to be heavily processed in order to even transport it in a pipeline. This costs energy (every gallon of tar sand oil has less energy) and increases emissions (big risk since the world is moving towards a market system in which emissions cost money). I think it costs like 80 dollars a barrel to produce oil from the tar sands.

People do not understand how economics works. Oil/gas price is controlled by WORLD supply and demand... I doubt China really wants some high priced oil when they can buy cheap coal from the U.S. and looks like they have all of Iran's oil now since the sanctions (probably at a cheap discount).

We just do not have the technology to make the tar sands economical when you can turn a spigot in the Middle East and produce a barrel for a dollar.

I think this is actually probably a good thing for the American people... with the pipeline there is probably some behind the scene deals that require us to buy a certain market share at a SET price... this has the possibility of raising energy prices for us because it is so expensive to produce.
