the good part about daoc for me wasn't that you could pvp in an exp zone.

it was purely the pvp.

form a group of eight with your 7 best buddies and dominate or fight some competitive and exciting 8v8.

keeps and terrain definitely spiced up battles larger than 8v8 but to me zerg surfing was a relatively simple. it wasn't that hard to perfectly gauge distance and use line of sight and speed to blast a noob to smithereens. it was alright, sometimes you found yourself totally outnumbered trying to defend a keep and pulling anything off was epic. mostly it was rp farming though.

The only thing I saw in that video was lag. And lots of it.

Oh man good times. I ran with a gank guild for a while and with a really good 8 man group you could tear some stuff up. I also enjoyed when the entire realm would rally to go defend the keeps and there would be the massive keep wars, usually between 2 realms but sometimes involving all 3. And then as a solo nightshade/ranger if you timed it right you could pick off one person of an 8 man group, kill him and be gone before the rest of them realized wtf just happened! Of course that was before vent and teamspeak were super common, so the reaction time wasn't always the best, but even now with just a couple seconds you could do some damage.

I think the best nights though were stealther's night out. Someone would coordinate via forums/private messages/etc. with stealthers in the other realms, who would gather every stealther person they could and we'd all meet at a pre-arranged spot to hold duels with each other. You could bring your buffbots for buffs/rezzes. If anyone broke the rules though, the other two factions would slaughter that person. It was also risky because you never knew when a group of people would run by and spoil all the fun.

I see very acceptable FPS for the number of people on screen (in more than one video). When DAOC was new and had LOTS of people in the RVR areas, it lagged like a bitch.

Best MMO memories are of DAOC, I doubt I'll ever have anything near the same as it is not just the game it was also the people. Running with the gank guilds and taking on a stupid amount of people and winning were always a blast.
