OP nailed it.
That reminded me 1000000% of the old days in DAOC.
Neat, might have to actually look into gw2.
Did they do away with the pure instanced world and make it a legit open environment ala daoc?
It appears to be that way. The only oddity I have seen so far is the queue system if a world becomes overpopulated. Instead of waiting in a line to get onto your server, they offer an alternative. They allow you to play your char on a temporary shard with other players (that are also in queue). Then when space becomes available you keep all progress and they shift you onto the primary shard.
Better than sitting in line for an hour and a much better system for the early days of a new MMO.

Read about that before actually.
Does not bother me at all since server pop should level out eventually across all servers and the system will be unnecessary. That said, it IS an EXCELLENT system to assure every is happy around release.
edit: you can dodge sh*t? +1 million points for gw2 already.

Probably instanced. I assumed it was a way for them to keep down server costs since there isn't a monthly sub.

something im reading posted:
We use a lot less instancing than we have in the past. The game is structured much more like other MMOs, with the world consisting almost entirely of fully persistent areas. That being said, we have a number of different ways in which we use instancing. Dungeons, for example, are instanced areas designed for group play.

Ah f***.
Now I'm sort of excited about an MMO.
This hasn't happened in a while.
Time to start scheming on ways to get into beta.

This is one of the few types of game play that can motivate me to play these days.

Am I the only one that skipped through parts of the video wondering wtf was going on? There's some lion dude, and he's using abilities, and he dies, then he "fights to survive" and uses some more abilities.
What the hell is this video showcasing, and why should I be impressed?
It is showing functional, non-laggy, large scale, three faction pvp... on a scale that has not been seen since DAOC.
Granted with extremely low lvl chars.
If you are not into PVP on the epic scale or you didn't play DAOC (and enjoy it for these things).. Then this thread isn't really for you.
What do you mean by large-scale? When I went to the official guild wars 2 site, it looks like all the pvp will still be limited to 10v10 matches, and that's what they'll be...matches. Do this and you win. Do that to win. Etc. Nothing like the fluid, real-time, realm vs. realm that could be had in DAOC.

Maybe I missed it but...it sounds nothing like pvp/rvr from DAOC.
