yep i agree if you cant solve your problem your self you don't get 5 of your friends to "handle it".
I don't really get this, most gang members do not shy away from a fight, and generally they are a lot braver than your typical person. They train themselves to not fear knives or guns, and to keep fighting after being stabbed/shot.

I grew up neighboring a really bad area, so there were kids in my school that claimed to be gang members, no idea if they really were.

Train themselves? Is your boyfriend a Crip or something? They're just kids with crappy lives and no reason to hope or believe that anything better than death is coming to them for the rest of their short lives. They're not brave, they're hopeless pawns in someone else's game...

I wasn't refuting any of this.
It takes bravery to go into a knife fight, take a stab wound, and keep going as normal. They actually do train/prepare themselves to be ready for those first fights, so you can't really deny that at all. Of course in prison the training is more intense.
Nice that you resort to dumb gay slights though. Pretty low brow, same humor those 'kids' would use.

They always explained it as that these kids that join gangs are brought in with the feeling that they're joining a family, which many of them have lacked in their lives so far. When you think about it in the context of the love of a brother, their fierce loyalty makes much more sense. I don't think its so much that they train to deal with pain and fear, as much as it is desensitized by living around it their whole lives.

Well even if you see people get shot/stabbed such in the neighborhood, that on its own doesn't do away with the fear of yourself being killed/wounded in combat. You need to prepare for that separately. Although the violent upbringing would help you deal with the aftermath (friends/family dying, not caring that you took a life, etc.).
In some gangs there is a strong sense of brotherhood, in others it is not promoted as much, and greed and competition is strong between members. It's more about getting to the top so you get more money and risk your life less.
(my source is watching lots of Gangland episodes and similar shows)

Honestly in my experience gang members generally fight in giant ridiculous packs of dudes. They fight like total pussies. 10 guys swarming one guy who looked at one of em funny, and then going back home talking about how badass they were.
