I was going to suggest testing a seed ahead of time on the assumption that terrain gen was stable.
Might be worth finding a stronghold and making sure it has a proper gate setup. (my SP seed has only a broken one.)
Edit: No point in a seed that's massively water for example.

Chickens. They are angering me. They keep dying in their pens until I'm down to 2, and they seem to live perpetually as long as I stay near their pen. Here are the schemes I've tried:
6x6 on grass surrounded by fence, 1x and 2x high.
6x6 on still and moving water surrounded by fence, 1x and 2x high.
2x3 on still and moving water, surrounded by glass, 1x and 2x high.
3x3 on still and moving water, surrounded by glass, 1x and 2x high.
How do you get more than 2 chickens to survive perpetually?

1 level of flowing water, pushing them away from fences and any edges.
No holes they can fall in, they die in a 1x1 hole because they like to stick their faces in a corner and suffocate.

I never had a problem with just a big pen of them. As long as it is level ground with a decent fence around it they seem to do ok for me.
