Betas of the beta. 
That's how to get the pre 5 client. You have to manually replace your existing minecraft.jar with it. I recommend backing up what you have first (on principle.)

Get out away from spawn and knock yourself out, lol. We have a nether network/subway for fast traveling so there is plenty to explore. I wouldn't worry too much though as as soon as they drop the official release we will be starting a new map.

I wonder if the map generation will be changing. I might just create a map using rc2 then pimp out the spawn and move it to the server in preparation of release this weekend.

I was going to suggest testing a seed ahead of time on the assumption that terrain gen was stable.
Might be worth finding a stronghold and making sure it has a proper gate setup. (my SP seed has only a broken one.)
Edit: No point in a seed that's massively water for example.
