Here's the view from below on mine.

The signs prevent any downward currents which would be fatal to the chickens.

Wheres your chicken ranch? I want to see it up close. Oh and do you think glass panes (not blocks) work as well as signs for a water holder upper, or do eggs get stuck on those?

Well, looks like I'll only be able to show up late to the party on release day.

Got an early schedule on Friday, so I won't be on until later that night.

Looking forward to seeing folks on the server again, it'll be interesting to see where y'all go and how ya get along.

For anyone brand new, I worked out a few first-day survival tips regarding tools and coal.

I know this info is probably well-known but here it is anyway:

-- CRAFT TABLE --

PUNCH 1 WOOD

MAKE 4 PLANKS

MAKE A CRAFT TABLE

-- WOOD TOOLS --

PUNCH 2 WOOD

MAKE 8 PLANKS

MAKE 4 STICKS (Now we have 6 planks and 4 sticks)

MAKE A WOOD PICK (uses 3 planks and 2 sticks)

MAKE A WOOD SHOVEL (uses 1 plank and 2 sticks)

MAKE 4 STICKS

-- STONE TOOLS --

DIG 4 STONES

MAKE A STONE PICK (uses 2 sticks and 3 stones)

MAKE A STONE SHOVEL (uses 2 sticks and 1 stone)

-- FURNACE --

DIG 8 STONES

MAKE A FURNACE

-- TORCHES --

PUNCH 3 WOOD

MAKE 8 STICKS

BURN 4 STICKS TO COOK 2 WOOD FOR 2 COAL

MAKE 8 TORCHES

-- OTHER TOOLS --

DIG 3 STONES

MAKE A STONE AXE

TOTAL: 6 WOOD

15 STONES

The gist there is that stone tools work better and last longer so you want those as fast as possible, hence minimal time with wooden tools getting stone.

The logic progression is:

Make a craft table so you can make tools (you can break the table and relocate it if you need to)

Make a wood shovel so you can dig dirt/sand/gravel to find stone if there's none visible

Make a wood pick so you can get stone

Get stone for stone tools

Make a stone pick to get more stone faster

Get stone for a furnace

Make a furnace

Make coal in the furnace (you can break the furnace and relocate it if you need to)

Make torches (one stick and one coal make 4) (charcoal and coal don't stack together but function the same)

Make a stone axe to get wood faster

And now that you've got light and stone tools, you can build a shelter above ground or underground. For above ground use stone two blocks thick if possible since it will handle a blast from a creeper better. Use wood planks to make a chest to store things in, and if you plan on keeping the shelter for a bit, use planks to make a door to get in and out easily. Going underground is the easiest, since it can be a temporary shelter and is very fast to make and expand in safety. Often there are open caves, and you can usually find a little coal and sometimes iron near the entrance.

After your first piece of coal I would just make 8 more using it instead of burning more sticks... it is more efficient. Also, unless I start somewhere with 0 exposed rock I skip the shovel and only make one wooden pick before shifting to all stone tools. Really though you stay that way for such a short period of time it isn't worth sweating the small stuff... start punching trees and rock and roll.

Oh and the new map is ready to roll. A nice landing zone in a large snow biome linked to a room at 115 in the nether for the start of the new HTH.

Snow biome is pretty rare. This does solve the problem of finding the,
