I just read a rumor, that is all over the gaming sites that SWTOR was pushed to September. I apologize if it was mentioned in this thread.
Anyway, that will really help Trion. It will help me because I wasn't going to start a MMO in the spring, only to leave it for another in the late spring.
Now I have something to do until September, if that is the case.

I tried the bard to level 7 or so. Basically I was playing a channeled song to build combo points and attacking. Like a ranged rogue of sorts. Do you know if at high levels they can solo pvp? Or are they group-oriented buffing machines?

You get Riff at 11pts in or something, it's an instant 2 point attack to compliment Cadence's built up 3. You can forgo the channeling altogether by taking Saboteur as one of your other souls and use the Charge/Detonate system which is all instant cast.
The tradeoff is you lose the self/aoe healing from Cadence, but you kill noticeably faster and gain much more mobility.

What Arc, said but instead of going with saboteur, i went with marksman.

Been playing with a druid/sentinal/warden combo that lets me solo groups of mobs easily as well as sit in the back and both heal/buff and do good ranged DPS during Rift events.
I suspect it's gonna be a long time before I head back to tanking in this game... having too much fun rolling clerics...gah 
Although I was also having fun with a necro/warlock/chlor

I know my first spec will be assassin. This is who I am in every game, so this will be no different.
My second spec is Riftstalker. I am so stupidly giddy about Rogue tanking. I loved tanking guild Karazhan runs back in the day with my 101% dodge suit. It was freaking awesome (until it got nerfed).
My third spec is PvP, with a bit of Sin mixed in.
My forth spec is what I will play with. Bard/sab looks very promising as something similar but vastly different.

Likely a Hunter (BM/MM/and third for stealth) because Hunter type classes always bring me joy. I'd really like to play a Cleric because there are some potentially fun combos... but I'm not seeing them being a long term answer for anything but standard healing in raids. If I can make a melee healing cleric (similar to the one in Warhammer) I'll go Cleric... but the melee healing tree is already pretty much the tanking tree now.
