I agree with what you are saying but when folks call WoW the best MMO on the market I always shake my head. It is the best MMO ever for the players who think it is, but not for all. I personaly don't rate my enjoyment of a game based on how many people are playing it. I would love to see Rift have a few DAoC style BG's, your not forced to group with players who may or may not have a clue and you don't have to leave till you level out of it or you want to. It also lets you have alot of small man fights or just hunting others with a buddy, makes for tuns of fun.

I did not say WoW was the best MMO ever. For me UO was the best (but as we all know your first tends to stick).

I said it was the best on the market (I intended to imply best during it's time period vs others of it's time period / released since). My opinion of that is not based on how many people play it. It's based on my own personal playing of the game and playing other games released before and during it's time.

I don't give any credit for which game has more players. I grade strictly on a fun to play and pay for scale.

As an aside I hated DAoC's battle grounds and generally thought DAoC was a terrible grind fest game run by terrible management. So... everyone has different opinions!

So I am wondering...

How may servers they will have at release?

Lets say that modest 500K signup at launch... what happens then?

What happens if its more than that?

WoW had the benefit of a large bankroll behind it at launch. Trion I doubt has access to the very same resources.

They were sporting a strong 42 servers during the last beta when I quit counting last. A staggered queue system (which staggers people leaving the newbie area) seems to be what that they stuck with during this last beta stress test. People would bitch about the queues but it'd be the best thing overall.

DAoC a grind fest? When DAoC first came out it was the norm to take as long as it did to level. I remember when UO came out it took me about a year to get 6x GM, things like GM Taming were hela hard to cap out. I never considered it a grind it was the first MMO thus the standard and totaly normal. Hell now DAoC takes 2 days to level to 50 get geared out and be PvP ready.

I think folks have just gotten so used to leveling being easy to do anything that takes a little time gets slaped with a grind label. And I am one of those folks, I have gotten spoiled with easy levels and hear myself complain if it takes too much time, I think we have just become an insta gratifaction MMO croud.

The amount of adverts I've seen for RIFT are crazy.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/?cc=5901 Usually has one floating on the front page almost 24/7

http://www.marca.com/ The most popular Spanish newspaper always has one as well

Really it's the only MMO (minus WoW) that I've seen on the front page adverts of sporting websites.

When WoW was released (2004) it was necessary to self-host.

It is no longer necessary for a MMO developer to self-host.

There are those who play tank classes, and those that tank.

You just said when it came out it was the "norm". Just because it was the norm doesn't mean it wasn't a grind. It was. Worse, it was a boring grind that required you to sit at 1 of 2 exact spots in a group pulling the same monster repeatedly for weeks and months.

I'd say that's a grind. Oh right, I did say that!

grinding static spawns was one of the things i hated when i played daoc. however, looking back it really added to the community building and social interaction. had some great conversations while grinding trees in southern most alb zone(cant remember the name).

I've been in some of the recent beta's and I think it's a good game.

I was thinking on passing on it, because it was maybe too familiar.

Now, I am getting more disenchanted with WoW as the weeks go by. I may take a break and play for a month and see.

I only played to the teens and I liked what I saw.
