I remember AC to of had a pretty big world. Then again aside from portaling there was no other traveling aid. Although you could increase your run speed quite a bit as you leveled up, so that was something.

You could easily run for hours, even days in AC.

i played in the most recent event. the game is truly fantastic, but the world design concerns me. everything is too close together and doesnt feel like a "world." there are mountains and high hills everywhere making it feel more cramped. i only made it to lvl 12. i understand that it probably opens up later on, but the size of the first zone is about the same as the others according the world map(and not many zones). did you folks that got to higher levels ever feel like you were in a "real" world. are there any expansive views later on with the country side fading into the horizon?

I wouldn't say it opens up dramatically, but the Scarlet Gorge did seem pretty expansive N-S, but cramp in the E-W fashion.

thanks for the input. i looked into this a little bit. seems to be a hot topic on several forums. i came across these images comparing landmass of some current games.

Rift isn't on either one, but still pretty interesting. i didnt realize how huge LoTRO is. i decided to fire it up and just run around admiring the world. turbine did a hell of a job on world design.

GW is pretty impressive!

That map for Guild Wars is only one of the expansions, too. Though I don't know if I'd say it's actually as big as it's shown on that picture. Having played through the Nightfall campaign, it is fairly large....for Guild Wars. Not compared to other games. I also call BS on the number for Daggerfall.

So far, I absolutely love Rift, finally a well polished game, no lag, no crashes, absolutely beautiful and fun! I do have one gripe that I hope they fix, the combat sounds and animations. Currently, they're boring and feel like a free to play type of gameplay.

This is my biggest issue.

I thought that some (read: not all) animations were kind of neat, and fit the classes, the bard stands out as something truly unique, with the trumpets and guitars popping out for our skills.

The paragon, while not overly fancy in their maneuvers, i thought the "whooosh trails" behind the weapons was a very neat affect.

I have way more experience with rogues, the nightblade animations looke kind of neat, different than other casting animations.

I did notice that my dwarf shaman, has different animations than my bahmi shaman does.

So, not sure if the race really has much to do with it.

I do know this, Female High Elves are horrible dancers.

I will admit that my experience in the invasion could have been an isolated one, I am looking forward to seeing more of them.

Also I am not sure on when joining in on rifts and invasions, I am joining the public group as soon as the option comes up, however there are still mobs whoes health bar is grey to me.

Does this mean there are people not in the group attacking? Am I still getting credit for this thing dying? Should I help kill it? Does it matter?

I think there are multiple public groups and if they are greyed out then another group has tagged it.. say this because only x amount of people are in a public group but there are FAR more people than what we have in teh public group.

Also, speaking for myself, sometimes as a Justicar I had to drop from the public group just to survive. By myself, I could help out a fair bit and handle the aggro I took on. When in a public group, my group/raid passive healing from my attacks was more beneficial to the overall raid (I'd expect) but unfortunately would get me killed after about 5 seconds (because the tanks weren't picking up all the mobs, and any untouched came straight for me). I don't like to do it, but in one invasion I died 3 times in a row with a total up-time no greater than 20 seconds.

Admittedly, this varied from situation to situation, and was far more common on the giant global invasion setup where the sheer number of mobs made picking them all up less likely. But just saying, in some situations, I drop from the public group by necessity. I'm not sure if any others have similar mechanics causing them to do so.

I saw the same thing on the healing aggro, especially in a 20 man raid.

I'd throw motif of regeneration, and get swarmed!

but, it's all good, my hots still tick while i'm dead, some nice clerics res'd me and I was able to be in the top 3 of contributors a lot of the time.

had some server issues when they first launched, but they were fixed with in hours. Since then I have never had one glitch logging on and I have never been disconnected.

Also no lag issues, no lag during PVP and no lag even during Rifts and invasions.

This was my experience on the Briarcliff (PVP) server. The first night, lag was borderline intolerable for me. By the next day, and a few quick patches / server downtimes, they had it humming like I was used to from the previous beta events.

Keeping in mind they probably quadrupled the beta participants for this event, and this was the first time I'd experienced queues logging in, I'm guessing they were expecting this to an extent and trying to find out where the server thresholds were before performance starting tanking.

They seem to be aiming for a higher quality release than most other mmorpgs have accomplished, so for that I wish them luck.

However, two things killed the game for me (and only me, these are personal opinions):

1. I hate questing on railway tracks. I have no patience for being led by the nose for advancement anymore. To be absolutely blunt, I would like to go back to a quest system that rewards items only, not experience, and does not affect content availability at all (ie, opening up new lands etc). Totally optional.

2. For all the variety in having all those souls to choose from, it really removes the feeling of attachment to your character. To me it seems like, say you're playing D&D and you can, on a whim, utterly change all your feats and skills. You'd basically be an entirely new character, and lost everything that happened before that.

For these reasons, I didn't really see much of a future for me playing Rift, and the wait continues. Hopefully it does well, though, as a reminder that quality mmorpg release is something publishers need to make a higher priority.
