People in WoW, at least on my server, regularly drop everything they do to defend Tol Barad (and before, Wintergrasp).

The "lets get a late night sneak on relics" is one of the lamest PvP mechanic I've ever seen in a game... talk about encouraging the "no life" and giving them an edge. You realize you got CALLS in the middle of the NIGHT to wake up and play a video game? Do you have a job you have to attend to in the morning? People complain about the difficulty of WoW heroic dungeons and how they are negative (supposedly) for casuals (poor casuals... they are confused with bad players), but being called to wake up in the middle of the night to play a video game beats that largely.

Any developer worth a grain of salt will never repeat such a "feature" - and indeed, all subsequent PvP games, like e.g. Shadowbane, had time windows in which attacks could happen, stopping a group of "no life" from coming in the middle of the night and destroy everything without any effort.

And World PvP WAS totally nonexistent in DAoC. PvP was ONLY in specific areas. Except on Mordred of course.

Look Korrigan WoW world "pvp" was and is nothing more then ganking, there is a big diff between ganking and pvp. PvP is = level players chance meeting with the same agenda, that is to kill members of another realm, WoW world pvp was and is mainly higher level players looking for lower level players exp'ing to gank. They want to take zero risk for some grim satisfaction killing a player 30+ levels below them. For me PvP is two or more players running into each other and a fight happens where the outcome is still a ?.

I can remember us running an 8 man crew in WoW 40+ man bg and having our own team complain because we were killing the other realm and causing them to turtle. It was all about who could kill the npc faster and no one wanted to fight each other, was funny to watch two zergs run past each other trying to get to the npc before the other one.

Yes yes yes... any adult with a job won't mind being called in the middle of the night to play a video game, completely breaking his sleep cycle. Nice story, pal.
You liked DAoC, which I also played extensively by the way, so be it. But don't try to pretend such major design flaws in that game were any good, and weren't favoring a specific part of the player population. And it's not the only design flaw of that type, of course... we could talk for hours about things like crowd control, stuns, mezzes...

And since we are talking about Rift, I doubt the developers will make such huge mistakes for their game. Even if what they did until now is pretty basic and "even" less original than WoW, they seem to be wanting to make things right and indeed be the third polished MMO since WoW release, and not a copy of some old, crappy game that was already back in time full of major design flaws.

I could care less what you believe about me, but I do mind you saying he I'm a female, my kids are all grown up, my husband & I have been truly blessed in our lives and are retired at 46. I have all the time and leisure in the world to do what I want. The bottom line is, people have the right to their opinions. I can say your game is flawed and you can say the one I really liked is flawed..and we should be able to have a conversation without someone "going 4 year old child" in the discussion and attacking the other person.

Some of my best memories about DAoC are the PvP situations (1 on 1) and (2 on 2) that happened out in the frontiers. Some of those were back and forth fights that lasted for 30, 45 mins.

If you never went without a raid or a guild group, you would never run into those situations, which might skew your perceptions of the game.

It would be just as easy to say that coordinated PvP doesn't happen in WoW either if you haven't personally experienced it.

Chalyndra.. I know you dont post here much.. so I just wanted to save you some frustration. There is a certain poster here that can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop posting, ever, until you give up and agree with it.

PS. How did you retire at 46 , give me your secrets!!!!!!

Well I think Rift is lucky to sorta be in the right place at the right time. It's one of the better of a new crop coming out and it is on schedule. A lot of our guildies are up for trying something new if only for a diversion for a few months. It looks solid enough to represent an alternative, whether it has legs or not remains to be seen. Nobody had seen the endgame and no one really knows whether all this pretty impressive class diversity is actually going to work.

We are wary. A lot of us old vets have been around the block enough times to temper all the hype with realistic expectations.

If it lasts 6 months, that's about par for the course for other games like LotRO and Warhammer (one had no PvP the other was looking good until they killed their endgame early on.) Although LotRO may have only been 4 months, come to think of it.

Haven't cancelled any of my WoW accounts.

If it ends not working, that's time enough for Blizz to stop with their new expansion thrashing, although I admit, it will be hard to come back to the cartoon graphics.

If it ends up working, fantastic. Who know for how long.

In the meantime, one WoW toon at 85, 4 halfway there.

And riftblade/reaver/warlord close to mount level, sentinel/purifier/warden rolled and currently mowing through mobs with a dwarf druid/shaman/warden.

Being able to retire at 46 to be able to play video games all night long is definitely something usual, sane and normal, which should be encouraged by game mechanics like being able to take keeps in the middle of the night without defense... I mean, being waked up in the middle of the night to defend a lousy keep in DAoC should be mainstream, every adult can do that, and definitely all 46+ year old people, aren't we are all retired and live happy lives with the government's money ?

Looks like someone needs a reality check. And it's definitely not me.

SWTOR: 50 Jedi Shadow (Tank), 50 Sith Marauder (Annihilation).
LOTRO: Lifetime account, playing very casually.
WoW: Both accounts canceled for now.
GW2: Future Warrior.

Yes, because you couldn't just as easily wait til the following night to go get a relic. You HAD to do it in the middle of the night.......
