I'll never understand how a pet or mount that affects nothing can somehow create an unlevel playing field, but whatever. It's not like it gives you any special abilities.

Someone doesn't understand the power gained from sitting in Org <AFK> while mounted on the new shiny drake of the month.

WTF? You have to wait in a queue to make a digital purchase?!?
"Due to a high volume of orders, you have been placed in an automated queue to purchase the product(s) in your cart. This queue allows controlled batches of visitors to finalize their purchases on a first-come, first-served basis. Simply wait at this page (do not close the window or refresh your browser!) until you reach the front of the queue.
Currently in Queue...
Position:
19330 - Estimated time:
55 minutes
Please note that being in the queue does not guarantee that you will have the opportunity to purchase an item. Once you have reached the front of the line you will be sent to checkout, at which point you will have 15 minutes to complete your transaction."
They did this with the celestial pony as well. Said it would only have limited numbers and then continued to sell it. Was a great tactic for "panic" sales.

Well, they shot themselves in the foot using that tactic with me. By the time my queue was up I had decided against buying it. Bad enough they are charging $25, but to make people wait an hour to buy a virtual item and act like it might be sold out if I didn't buy it immediately? FU Blizz.

Maybe it's fiscal year end for them and they need to make their numbers.

There are those who play tank classes, and those that tank.
The weapon is only as good as the person wielding it.
Free advice is often worth what you pay for it: nothing.

I'm confused. What does a pretty mount or non combat pet have to do with a level playing field? It doesn't give even the slightest advantage to anything in game nor are you at a disadvantage for not having one. It's purely for looks.
What we display is a reflection of our progress in the game too.
Ya, because displaying a mount you can buy and do nothing to get it (in game) is certainly a reflection of your 'progress'.
Anyway, I doubt this mount took 1-2 hours to create. The celestial pony? Sure.
The winged lion thing probably took 3. It looks pretty badass in comparison.

My point is, if I see Joebob with an elite mount from a rare drop (etc.), I respect his progress. If I see a winged lion (or sparkly pony) I think, "why would you...?"
There was a time when the mount you were on reflected your progress. Now that you can buy one, it has diminished the mount as a progress marker. In my eyes, if I see mounts that have been bought for real cash I think, "noob who couldn't obtain one through actual 'gameplay'.

I, on the other hand, prefer a command-line system 'cause i'm so hardcore
/north /north *You encounter an [Avatar of the god Set]!*
/cast sheild *sheild spell unavailable*
/csat shield *csat: unknown command*
*[Avatar of Set] beheads [Peasant]*

It still does, it's just a bit different now.
Remember when you had an epic mount and you were awesome, because they were super expensive? Then you had the raredrops and such. Now you have Gladiator pvp unique flying mounts and raider achievement flying mounts.
Those mounts reflect the progress you've made with your toon. People who buy the mounts, like me, got it because it looks pretty nifty, though I doubt I'll use it very often.
What will I fly around on? My Ulduar drakes, my ICC drakes, my Naxx drake, and every once in a while the few flying mounts I've gotten in Cata.
