Got mine today, so far I like it. A lot snappier than the First Nook. Will give a few days, and post my thoughts. Feel free to ask questions until then though...

What does the screen look like? Does it look like the old Nook? It is glassier? Does it look thicker or more reflective? Even a little?

No, screen is different. More of a textured matte finish. Looks really good with less glare.

<edit> Now I see what you were referring too. No, it's not a touch screen technically. It uses inferred sensors on the borders to detect where your finger hits the screen. This allows for it to be a pure pearl eInk display without having to lay a touchscreen over it causing you to lose contrast (i.e. Sony Daily Edition).

So, in answer. No it is still a great looking touchscreen with glare, loss of contrast or anything else.

i'm really tempted to buy one because then i could give my mom my current nook and it'd be nice for her but at the same time i'm like mine is still perfectly acceptable and for $200 i can get a lot of games that are coming out soon. decisions decisions.

It's much smaller as well, take the first Nook's screen and just add about 3/4 - 1 inch border all the way around and there you go. Actually fits into some of my pockets. Still has the side buttons just like the previous nook to turn the pages, and you are actually able to select whether the top or bottom button pages forward/backward. Not a big feature or anything, but a nice little bit of customization. Shopping and navigating on the Nook itself is now much simpler, and the on-screen keyboard and menus are much, much more responsive than the First Gen Nook's touchscreen, which seemed sluggish to me. You also do not get the refresh when turning every page, only about every 6 or so pages will it do a refresh. Again, not a game changer, however it is a nice touch.

Overall I personally prefer it over the original nook, and will keep it.

Been looking into this new nook as well. Will check it out first at B&N before I decide. I already have my ipad which i use to read on but this seems a tad bit easier to carry around for long hauls.

I have an iPad and rarely use it for reading. You'll be happier reading on a nook

Ive loved reading on my ipad and its the main reason why I got it. That and for school purposes. Is this nook that much better than a kindle? I assume I cant use my ebooks from the kindle app on the book correct?

You can if you strip the DRM off and convert them. Otherwise, yes, in my opinion the Nook is better. This is from my personal experience of handling both (Kindle 3 & DX vs. Nook 1st generation), but its just my opinion.
