McCain never had a chance. No Republican did.
Democrats knew this and that's why they took the chance on nominating a total noob. They could have nominated a cup of coffee and still beat the best Republican that year.

Talk about bad revisionist history...Hillary was the presumptive nominee going into the primaries. Obama cleaned house at the caucuses and split the delegates in many of the bigger states where it was allowed. It was largely Hillary's nomination to lose, and she lost it badly.

In 2008 Abraham Lincoln would have lost to Jimmy Carter. That's how unpopular the Republicans were.

Nonsense.
The only way the Dems would have known it was safe to nominate a noob is if they had known 6 months before it happened that Lehman was going bankrupt on September 15 and the world economy was about to fall apart.
And by this time, the Republicans were wishing for Romney and the Democrats were already wondering if Hillary wouldn't have been the better choice. McCain vs Obama over a backdrop of the financial meltdown was like watching a cripple fight in the Roman Coliseum.

McCain would have lost by more without Palin. On paper she helped him in every place he was weak. Problem was, Palin was, and will always be, a beauty pagent contestant. If she had taken her opportunity seriously, she could have really been a bright light for her party. Unfortunately, she relied on populist crap and never bothered to learn anything that she'd would really need to know to govern. Now she hangs out with the neo-know-nothings and they have a nice stupid circle going that with self-destruct of its own accord.
Of course, Obama is clearly a train wreck as president, but then you do get what you deserve when you vote for fluff over substance.

The moment McCain did the coup de grĂ¢ce to himself; "The fundamentals of the economy are strong" -Sept 2008
He tried to spin that afterwards but there was no recovery possible from that gaff.
