The type of marketing you are talking about is still perfectly legal, and is more active than ever. in fact, everyone would be better off if you stuck to only downloading those songs for free. You'd be happy. Sony would be happy. artists with sony would be happy, artists giving the music away would be happy, and everything would be legal.
But you don't. You download songs that are not intended to be passed around the school yard. Why? And what do the two completely different acts have to do with each other?

Because 30 years ago I would have just paid because I am too much of a pussy to go steal from a store so I will bask in my anonymity!

30 years ago it was done one of two ways. Recorded off of the radio, after which you would transfer all the songs you like to a single cassette tape. Or, you gave the dude at school who wanted to be a DJ 5 bucks and he would make you a tape with any songs you wanted. If you were friends with said guy, your tapes were free.

or you went to friends houses and made a copy of their album or tape
i stole from record stores in the mall all the time.
stealing from the store at the mall is stealing. the store, a localy owned private business back then, bought cases of albums and had to resell them to make their profit. i was hurting the local business more than the artist.
and everyone owned a dual cassette deck in one form or another. wtf do you think those were for? they were for the same thing the internet is for now adays.
how many millions did avatard make at the box office, despite all the piracy going on?
