an espresso cafe would do great in the right area.

most people drink coffee.(period)
espresso is yuppy. very yuppy.
it might do good in the right neighborhood downtown chicago but not out in the far suburbs where i am.

i am in an area where the craft brew/high end beer trend is starting to take hold and theres enough of a higher end clientele with a 15-20 min drive that my place should work.
theres a brew pub 25 mins from my house thats been there 15+ years. theres a micro brewery that just opened about 30 mins from my house thats doing great and has great beers.
theres a couple other craft brew places in the area that are popular but dont have such great beer or its not so consistent. nothing within a few mins drive of where i want to open my place.

my last name is scottish. there used to be a brewery in scotland with my name till it got bought out by inbev and shut down recently.
i would totally do the scottish theme with short kilts on hot serving girls and maybe a scottish musician to play low key stuff at off peek times.

im in an area where this could fly off the handle in no time.
the time is now. move or lose.

Bars are not easy to run, they either do mildly well or fail miserably. Personally, I would frequent a bar like that, as long as it wasn't too expensive. If I'm on lunch, I might stop in for a sandwich if its at sandwich price and not bar price. I might go there for a few beers, get hungry and order a sandwich, or just as easily say, "crap, $9 for a sandwich? Where can I go around here to eat."

I would suggest carrying some non-home brew as well. Not everyone is a beer enthusiast and you want to sell them something they know they'll like. I usually experiment but sometimes I want a good meal and a beer I know will go with it. Or think about heading out to a bar and just want a beer I'm used to.

average price for a lunch around here is 8 bucks with a drink.

it would be all my brews but its not hard to brew a better bud/miller light.

i can emulate the standard light beer. thats what the "session beer" would be.
just because it doesnt carry your favorite moniker doesnt mean its not exactly the same or similar enough to pass as your old favorite.

ive sat and watched people come into a high end bar and try to order drinks. they say: "give me a bud light." we say: "we have the 60 shilling which is a bud light type of beer, only with real flavor."

5 gallons of 60 shilling would cost me 25 bucks. that price gets cheaper as the quantity goes up. thats a money maker beer. i hope they only drink that.

i could a deli sammich and a 60 shilling for 8 bucks all day long. or a coke/pepsi for those who cant handle an NA beer on their lunch breaks

Yeah, I would do that at least. I understand your passion for it, but you don't want to exclude any potential clients. Remember, its a business, not you trying to impress your friends with your latest. Maybe wait until you grow a little and compare your sales before you go all home brew. Honestly, I'd do at least half your drafts company beer, I'm not questioning your abilities to match their beer, but if someone has never been in your place before, they'll have to trust that your beer is good. You'll lose the customers who don't want to trust. You'll lose their friends when one says, "hey, lets go to sweenys, he's got amazing home brew!" And everyone else is like, " Eh, I just want a blue moon."

theres no shortage of beer connoisseurs in this area.
the majority of "standard bars" in this, immediate area are total redneck dives or coke dens.

theres no shortage of people from neighboring towns that wouldnt flock to this place because its closer than the other brew pub, or just plain different.

i live in a town of 22k people that borders another town of about 40k people and another twon of aobut 20k....

im not out in the sticks. i, personally, drive a few towns over to hit nice bars with good beers.

im not looking to draw the local neighborhood regulars. im drawing a crowd from 4 or 5 neighboring towns as well as the work crowd at lunch time and after work for a quiick beer.
