New Jersey has a lot of problems with town government and the funding of schools. This makes people generally annoyed at.... teachers. 
Christie has made a political career out of arguing against teachers. There is little doubt that their pensions needed reform but Christie did it in a way that got him a lot of attention by the right wing. Democratic governors have also made changes to benefit plans but few if any were as rude to the unions in the process.
The real lesson of Christie's fame is that if you are a jerk to those evil teachers you will gain support with the right.
Also Buffet is right which pisses off those who think the only real problem in this country is that we tax capital gains at all.

If Buffett was really so concerned, he would take his compensation in the form of a salary, not stocks and bonuses that are taxed at the lower capital gains rate.
