They can shut down refineries on a whim and drive up prices virtually overnight (which is pretty much what they have been doing) despite the fact that there is both a) weak demand and b) a glut of supply of their product.
Then by default half of the country will blame whomever is in the White House at that given moment for the fact that the price of their product (and their resulting profits) are soaring.

Not really, no. You left out several layers of major players who could not care less who occupies the WH.

Obama's win or loss will be based solely on the economy. There are a lot of dominoes in our economic future, and no one knows what oil prices will be in the run-up to the election.

Oil prices are climbing but aren't nearly as high as in 2008 when gas prices were last this high.
But yeah, oil and fuel prices can go a long way toward derailing the recovery. I have assumed for the past year or so that a double dip was all but inevitable but I never saw oil/gas prices as a catalyst.

You are 100% correct Rosaria. When people come into my office this is what they are talking about. They aren't talking about China, killing Osama, religion, abortion, gay marriage. The economy is all I hear about and people are pissed off.
