I forgot about gathering people to do the Epic quest at 50!!

There will never be another game with the community DAOC had.

I must be missing something here.

1. WoW had over 13 million subs and still has > 10 million
2. STWOR "could secure 1 million long term subs"
3. ???
4. SWTOR IS TEH WOW KILLER I CALLED IT!

I'm pretty sure , after all this years,
that DAOC will never be surpassed

Leveling your first character to 50 back in 2002 was a pure grinding hellfest. Anyone who remembers it differently is wearing bright rose colored glasses. I spent some weekends eight hours a day grinding werewolves in Malmohus and was level 49.5 when Darkness Falls was released. At least it was fun to get my last half a level, but before that, grinding Raumarik and Malmohus was a boring nightmare.

PvP on the other hand...I will never have a more fun gaming experience than that, and that makes me very sad. I spent months at level 35 just solo assassinating people in the Hib frontier. I had to force myself to stop and get back to leveling.

It WAS grindfest, but even at boring grindfest, DAOC was better than other grind fests out there
It comes down to community...lots of fun people that had no problem to suicide and lose 3-4 hours
worth of exp just to go to defend realm
When my paladin finally hit 50, I got around 50 people to come help with level 50 epic, and I think
I didn't even know 50 people in any of other MMOs I played, let alone I'd get 50 to come help
with something

There's a pretty good argument to be made that the grind was a major contributing factor to DAOC's 'community,' and the lack of that grind in WoW and other games is a major reason why the community feel just isn't as strong in those games.

You would sit in the same spot for hours on end with people and actually get to know them via chat because there wasn't shit else to do besides killing the same spawns over and over and over and over and over

That was certainly true of EQ1, which had an even more tight-knit (but much worse) community than DAOC, and a much more extreme grind too. The nice thing about DAOC was that with a few exceptions the gameplay actually encouraged you to work WITH your realmmates instead of against them. EQ1 was a capitalist anarchists's paradise, all about everyone out for themseleves and every guild competing against every other guild for scarce lewt resources.

God that was retarded. I can't believe I ever did that. Leveling in current MMOs is far superior. If only they could make it a bit harder and still stay away from grinding, it would be perfect.
