DAoC has the worst combat mechanics I have ever experienced.

They were harsh for sure, and not for everyone. I think they are the best I've seen to this day.

TOR is already hemorraging subscribers. They'll be very lucky if they've got 500k by the end of the year.
Are they really hemorrhaging subscribers or is it just that you don't want to play it anymore. I can't tell the difference in gaming threads like this: people go all in, love and rave about it, get bored, leave it, then say the game failed.

There are a LOT less people playing than there were 30 days ago. But that's to be expected with any new MMO and I don't know how much of it is really people cancelling as opposed to just putting in fewer hours per week.
Somewhere I read that 50% retention rate after the first month is actually pretty good for MMOs.

...or play beta like me, find out that its single player game, and never actually buy it
I got cautious after AOC, and even more after Rift (that I actually liked until I went to pvp)

Yes and no. DAOC had horrible, horrible combat mechanics at the personal level.
Those horrible mechanics actually created a pretty good group combat dynamic, though. When you had a good balanced group of 8 things clicked into place pretty well.

Leveling your first character to 50 back in 2002 was a pure grinding hellfest. Anyone who remembers it differently is wearing bright rose colored glasses. I spent some weekends eight hours a day grinding werewolves in Malmohus and was level 49.5 when Darkness Falls was released. At least it was fun to get my last half a level, but before that, grinding Raumarik and Malmohus was a boring nightmare.
PvP on the other hand...I will never have a more fun gaming experience than that, and that makes me very sad. I spent months at level 35 just solo assassinating people in the Hib frontier. I had to force myself to stop and get back to leveling.

Is it even worth playing? I played beta and was disappointed. I might wait like 5 months and then give it a shot. Doubt I'll try it still though. Last hope with MMO's is gw2

It WAS grindfest, but even at boring grindfest, DAOC was better than other grind fests out there
It comes down to community...lots of fun people that had no problem to suicide and lose 3-4 hours
worth of exp just to go to defend realm
When my paladin finally hit 50, I got around 50 people to come help with level 50 epic, and I think
I didn't even know 50 people in any of other MMOs I played, let alone I'd get 50 to come help
with something
