I work for the gubmint. No one expects you to check your email 24/7 even while on public transit. I don't even usually check my work email on the weekend.

The reality is that money in our society is a big deal. Driving an expensive car or dressing like you have money gives people the impression youre a big deal.
Its because money is a big deal in this society.
If someone kills ypur children, you can sue them for monetary restituion... Clearly money is a big deal - its used to reward and punish people.
Edit: A bmw is not that expensive... 2 bmws side by side, one can cost 30k and another can cost 100k- they will look the same to most people (ex x3 vs x5M)... So the x5M owner who paid a 100k is not showing off to anybody but the people that can recognize them (assuming the owner is showing off).
