The whole idea of status is based on the opinion of people around you. I don't see how you can call something a status symbol if no one else recognizes it to connote status. You might want a status symbol that only certain people recognize but if no one recognizes it it seems like you failed.
So it is a failed status symbol.
That seems like a distinction without a difference. If I want to be an engineer and fail because no one will hire me does that make me a failed engineer rather than not an engineer?

Noticing things doesn't make you hung up. It's just noticing things. It is interesting how our society sorta puts people in this double bind where it expects people to buy status symbols but also expects them to deny the reason they buy a status symbol is for the status.
I notice a lot of things. I don't come here and make a thread about it every time I notice something.

Actually it is literally an example of wearing or using the status symbols of a group. One can wear the status symbol of the rich without being rich. They are still status symbols.
The faulty assumption here is that the only status symbol being considered is that of the rich. There are numerous statuses to consider all with their own symbols.

I only patronize the finest hair shirt establishments. Some posers use cashmere shirts to try to LOOK like they're wearing a hair shirt but not deal with the pain. My hair shirts are all 100% American porcupine ass bristles.
