No, he's just a young, recent law school grad.
FWIW, I'm with you on the smart phone deal Yuki. I am one of the few people I know without one too.

No but I am surrounded by them. I am practically the only person I know anymore who doesn't have a smart phone.
I only ask because the Bay area is pretty much where it started and being in Sac I see them all the time.

Just the other day someone at work offered me their old smartphone since they had upgarded. I was like "that's a nice offer thank you, but wouldn't I have to pay $30 more per month for a data plan?" and he was like "yeah, but you can use it to check your email on bart!" and I was like "why would I want to do that?" and he was like "well what if you get lost while driving?" and I was like "I don't get lost while driving and if I did I'd just look at a map" and he was like "well fine then!" and acted all pissy the rest of the day.

ROFL I hate to admit it, but I've had almost the identical conversation with about a dozen folks I know.

People like nice things. That doesn't mean they're trying to show off or impress others, though I suppose it's sometimes hard to tell the difference - there's certainly no shortage of people that like to show off. There are brands that are fashionable, and then there are brands that are known for quality. Sometimes these things overlap.
I think the BMW is a bad example. If given the choice between a BMW or a Honda, most people would pick the BMW... some for status, most because it's simply a nicer car inside and out. If no one had ever heard the names BWM or Honda, chances are they'd pick the BWM after looking at it, sitting in it, and driving it. Quality (and looks) matters. Of course when you're choosing and buying for yourself, you judge that in accordance to what you can comfortably afford and what's important to you. If you have millons, a few extra grand for a car is no big deal even if the increase in quality is minimal. People want the best for themselves, or at least the best they can afford... even if nobody sees it.
Certain clothes are probably a better example... because the quality of the clothes doesn't always translate well to what they cost. I've seen designer crap that looks like it would fall apart after one wash and is neither attractive nor functional. People pay a lot of money for a shirt just because it has a little animal embroidered on it when they could probably find an equal or better quality shirt for significantly less. However paying extra for fine materials and construction isn't necessarily about status, it's about personal comfort and better living.

I am guessing then you don't have a job that requires you to be in touch with clients pretty much 24/7?
